Just wondering whether anyone else uses this? It's a great way of subtly placing a key card next to a chosen card.

Is this the move from Dai Vernon?

It is a Vernon thing. I've never used it. It's subtle, but it always struck me as a bit of an odd procedure. I've never liked justifying an odd procedure by giving a name to it. Others might disagree, but I just don't think "the ginsburg poke" becomes a less suspicious looking procedure just because you tell the spectator to give the deck "the ginsburg poke".
There might be some situations where it's the perfect key-card placement, but I'd imagine they're highly context specific. But then again, I've never tried it in performance, it might work great and no one suspects a thing. Paul

Yes...you can muster up some interesting images with a name like the ginsberg poke! It was written up in Dai Vernon's Inner Card Trilogy. It is an unusual procedure and I think you're right Paul it doesn't become less suspicious just because you tell the spec to give the deck a gp. It's just something I add in now again for variety if only to see the reaction on peoples faces when I ask them to give it a poke...oo-er!

Similar to the Scarne cut.
Al Smith had some good ideas based on this in print years ago. I even recall playing with the move myself. Paul. |

While I like the concept of the move, I've never used it for the sole reason that I don't think my audience (or me, for that matter) know what the hell a 'ginsbury poke' is supposed to mean...
Some old people expression like shooting the breeze...? =) Cheers Ted

The move can be very useful, actually. I never call it by name in front of the audience, though, nor do I use it in the manner described in the Vernon book. I use it for a totally different effect in a routine I call "Ginsberg's Folly." Mark Leveridge has a similar routine on his Art of Table-hopping video--mine has a different (and IMO, better) climax.
Paul Harris' self-cutting deck is, in a way, the Ginsberg Poke in reverse!
