What are some of your opinions on invisible thread? Which is the best type? Do you prefer thread or elastic? What about electric reels and such? Thanks.

Jwade, that is a question of persona, what I like using may or may not fit you. But if you are just starting of I would suggest you to get Jon LeClair's Who's afraid of invisible thread both the book and the DVD, it will have all the neccessary props to get you started.

I prefer elastic thread because it doesn't break as easy. Depending on your hook-up, you can tell when the elastic thread is close to its breaking point. But then again elastic thread tends to be a little bit more visible (the reflection) when stretched. Everyone will have his own preference.

I prefer regular thread to elastic, but that's probably because I haven't used elastic much, only tested it. I'm probably going to pick it back up for kicks and mess around to see whether I like it or not.

Different thread for different uses, I tend to use elastic thread for stationary hook ups and loops, and Kevlar or the new Jaxon thread for body hook ups or ITR.

What would you all use for extreme close-up like performing in a restaurant or for the cashier at a store?

The LeClair animator hook-up with Murphy's IT and LeClair putty is perfect for just those settings..

Have you tried getting the individual threads out of women's nylons? It works pretty good and is cheap. But I would recommend professional thread more though.
I've never tried elastic. Is it good?

I'd have to say thread is the best to use. Although it may be more breakable its better not doing the trick at all then having someone figure it out. (elastic thread) Unless you are doing stage where the lights are completly off and your floating a little light I'd sudjest use thread. I've been working with thread for about 3 years now and it always seems to do good. My only problem I would say would have to be when I'm doing street magic and I walk around I have to be careful so the string does not break by getting caught to anything.

I would suggest going to a local fabric store and getting a spool of "Woolly Nylon." The manufacturer that I am familiar with is YLI. Make sure it says "black" on the package as brown can appear black under certain lighting.
With a spool, which is cheap to buy, very strong and will last a lifetime, you can make your thread as long as you want. You will need to "strip out" individual, single, strands from the spooled thread, but this is easy enough. Many magic stores sell "Woolly Nylon", wrapped around a small piece of cardboard, and relabeled as "magicians thread." They can then charge a lot more than you will pay the same thing from your local fabric/sewing shop. Good luck. |
