"I will have to look at this one."
Do.... it's very impressive and apparently relatively unknown. Plus it has the added bonus of not hurting in the slightest. I hate traditional pulse stops because of that. Another technique suggested in the book is using a ball of toilet paper instead of a ball or other hard gimmick. It supposedly works just as well, but doesn't bruise. Can't say I've tried it myself, though. |

NAyone looking for the un-gimmicked version should check out Luke Jermay's performance and explanation - it is available on Skullduggery. As seen on TV!

Candini,
Try Googling "Sleight of Mind Harling Nyrup", you'll find online dealers everywhere. I got mine through Magicshop.co.uk, but then I'm a UK resident. It was kindly signed by the authors, though. There's a review on MagicWeek which gives the basic idea: Click Here! This book is the nearest I've come to the 'real thing', but in saying that, you're probably far more experienced and better qualified to judge than me. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Mark. |

I am very much a lurker here but I thought I would add my thoughts to this topic.
A pulse stopping routine is not something I would perform, although I am familiar with the methods. I find it interesting that some seem to be looking at the mechanics of it rather than how it is performed, but ultimately the effect and success it has on the person taking the pulse. I was someone who took the pulse for someone previously mentioned in this thread. The pulse didn't stop, but I played along as I knew the routine. I didn’t mind at all, but I wonder how many would. I even pretended the pulse had stopped when people asked me after the performance. But how many others would? Is it a question of making it work 100% of the time or is it how it is performed and how the participant is made to feel during the routine? I understand you need the mechanics behind it but give the people taking the pulse slightly more credit and ultimately thinking you have got your pulse to 'stop' is only half the battle won - don't be complacent. |

Interesting Laura . Nice to hear from a real person . So many practitioners of hypnosis and suggestion seem to mainly convince themselves.
I was at a demonstration lecture of someone named above where the same lady from the audience was used for demonstrating several suggestion effects. I spoke to her in the break . She was very nice and obviously wanted to be helpful . Her language became very creative as she attempted to be honest without giving the game away . I saw some very strained English expressions as she did the same to audience questions later. I thought to myself : "Pick a nice English girl and you are the best hypnotist in the world." |

As a Highlander I often (when wearing the kilt) do a crutch pulse stop.
Some find it funny whilst others are offended by it I guess. Me? I just like it, it makes me smile. Bobser.

Thanks Mwilliams, will check it out.
OKay, I just returned from my close-up, strolling mentalism/PK/metal bending job tonight I thought I would try out the pulse stop. I practiced a few times before I left and didn't find my pulse. WHat I do is find my pulse, then stop it and keep my fingers right on the pulse. This way, I know when it stops (so yes it does work). I tried it on two different women tonight exactly like I practiced. I first asked who had nursing experience etc......then who knew how to take a pulse. When I found one, I had her take mine telling her I could stop it. Well, there ya go. Worked fine and my hand doesn't feel bad .......not yet anyways....They were baffled, one just kept laughing (they were drinking also) and she was the only one at the table so I knew it worked. If I survive, this will be added to my arsenal.

Learn the psychology of performing especially on stage then ask this. Seriously, have you ever performed a stage show? It holds lots of hypnotic powers. Simply being on stage induces a trance. |

What Scott says does seem impossible I know. And yet it's simply true.
Even in hypnotherapy itself a good therapist will tell you that the client 'slips' into the state (assuming there is such a thing)before it even being initiated.

You must all try to read the 3 pages in the David Berglas Book (368 to 370) and see what he did with the pulse test and the way the happenings were communicated to an entire audience, not just the 2 helping. Then for a devastating practical routine look up 7 Deceptions by Luke Jermay. The Chapter is 'For Andruzzi'page 14 to 18. You'll find all the methods, the psychology etc in these pages. And after all Kenton Knepper (as was Banachek) was so impressed with Luke's work he published it.

Thanks Allen for the tip to all of us. Let me state, I did this where I work at a resort. Its a western type town from the 1800s and the name Enchanted gives me lots of spin offs. This type of an effect belongs in a complete act and some build up is very worthy. I'd not open with this but use it after the audience is on my side so to speak.
I isolated a few and did this to see if it would actually work. I won't waste it again. Not knowing the long term health effects, I prefer to savor this and work on a proper presentation.
