I get that, Juggleral. You strike me as a bit of a clown. But I don't think "chicks" dig fuschia, was MY point. I might go along with the purple.
Funny thing, at the end of my show, I too am kind of hoping they will say, "She sure was funny. And the magic was good, too." And they do. But they also say, "Magicalaurie, you are very cool." |

I have never thought of myself as a clown with out makeup, but I like it. I'm sure at the end of all your performances they say you were magical, funny, cool, well dressed, and a very attractive woman. just my opinion Al

Actually, I usually wear my old school colors - Black and Blue - Hard Knocks College. I went to grad school at Goshwotta University.

Color matters above even the style of what you are wearing. Color theory is all about psychology. When designing, we choose colors that evoke emotions we hope the audience to have. It just helps to give an extra boost to what we're doing. Check online or at amazon for information on what different colors represent and try some stuff out. Style is the next most important, it has to fit your personality. Also, when choosing new costumes, think comfortable.

Consideration number one when considering color is your surroundings. If the backdrop you will be working in front of is black, then black would not be a good color. You will fade right into the scenery. If you provide your own backdrop, then that's a completely different story.
Several years ago, there was a bird act working at Magic Island. The fellow did not realize that you can do a wash against a background. Here he was, black tux, black shirt, black backdrop, black silks. So they could see a face and hands, then a couple of birds. Bad planning. If you work in black and the backdrop is black, have the light crew do some color of wash on the backdrop. Make sure that none of your gaffs flash when you do this, though. Second, consider the tricks you are doing. When Kozak works at the World's Greatest Magic Show, he does part of his MC bit in white. Why? It makes him look very imposing. And he contrasts with the black stage curtain. But he does the salt pour as part of his show. Salt won't show up against the white outfit. So, what does he do? He changes costume between segments. He goes back to the dressing room and puts on a shiny brown suit that shows up against the backdrop and shows off the salt. And it's a good color for him. Sometimes the character determines the color of the costume. Sometimes the stage determines that. Sometimes the rest of the props determine it. It's not a simple question. The idea of getting a personal image consultant to work with you is excellent. However, when you get very technical about it, these people are trying to find what works with your natural colors. When you go "theatrical," you can change ANYTHING about your natural color that you want to -- hair, eyes, anything.
