Hi, I started fire eating last week, and have got it looking nice now aswell as safe, but I am having trouble with the time before it goes into my mouth, just above it, I have read that you are not meant to breath out before you want to extinguish the flame, well, I do, and I have tried it without breathing out, and it hurts!! the flame is held to long near my lips or what? it just seemd that the only way to get it into my mouth is to breath out at the same time as putting it in? how do you guys do it?????
(And yes I learned with an expirienced performer and had all of the saftey stuff by hand and you shouldnt attemp this without all the above) Another BIG problem is vapours, I cant hold vapours in my mouth at all, someone told me to pretend to take a drag on a fag without it going into my lungs, just into my mouth, well, I don't smoke! I would like more help on this than the above, thanks, daz |

Since you learned from a serious performer, you should probably go back for another practice session. If the person knows his/her stuff, (s)he should easily be able to talk you through these difficulties.
You mention that it looks good, and now you're safe. If you had real experience with this, you'd know that there is no such thing as safe, just careful...always careful. I apologize for not being more forthcoming. Most of us here agree, that this material should only be taught in person.

As Harley says... Get a professional one on one teacher. It doesn't sound as though you were properly taught...

Well, he wasnt a professional, by any means, but he does it BRILLIANTLY, and by saying safe, I meant that at the start I did not 'feel safe' doing it or, say, confident, well now I feel like I wont burn my lips all the time! just more confident. I have been properly taught, or at least, before he taught me, I have read most of the material on the internet, and he followed it exactly. I cant see a problem in the way the I have been taught?
I understand that you may not want to give advice, but what about tips on how not to do it? at least with the vapours? I know, I shouldnt ask that so straight forward now, but I feel that I need tips on how not to do vapours, just in case. thankyou for your help, daz |

This is nothing personal dazz, so please forgive us for being reluctant.
The internet is great for spreading information democratically...anybody can get to it...anybody can post it. But the kinds of things we do, have been kept secret, or semi-secret for thousands of years. At first, it was because the people who had these skills wielded religious power, and would not have allowed themselves to be less god-like by sharing the information openly. This is still true today, for some stunts, in some parts of the world. A benefit of that secrecy, is that it guarantees that the person learning the stunt, will have a good teacher. The internet fails in this. It cannot provide the kind of relationship that one needs to either teach or learn properly. Personal relationship? No. A physical eye being kept on all aspects of training? No. One can write all kinds of directions on the net, but without that relationship, it's only a thing of somebody bragging that they have "secrets"..."mine's bigger than yours"...etc. A good teacher will know how to help you get through your individual quirks. Please find one. There really is no substitute.

Thankyou for that. I have got back to the teacher that helped me and he has been wonderful, I am meeting him again tonight, thankyou again, that's ok, I understand, and I am getting help on another forum, one for fire arts and stunts, where all the information is already out there, as this one is not devoted to it, there is less information on here, thankyou again, and I know that I will get a lot of safty talk again, but this is what I want, and it is ok to post safty isn't it? but what would do the vapours do if I inhaled them WITHOUT being alight?
I thankyou again, daz |

There would be a high probability of developing a condition that's sometimes called "fire-eater's lung". The fumes damage the tissue in your lungs, and make it unable to function in the way it should. It doesn't heal enough to restore full functioning, as I understand it. Your breathing becomes impaired, and you can become disabled. It's similar to asthma in effect, without the good periods, and can become more like emphysema.

Thankyou very much Harley, that's all I wanted, anything else, tips, or whatever you don't want to post here, pm or email. but thatnkyou very much. I think there is more danger in burning your mouth with this than regular fire eating, is that true? that's only what I think, and not what I know mind. I met up with him tonight, VERY helpful and I can now hold a little vapour, not much but it will come (i hope!) thankyou, daz

On another post I complained about burning my bottom lip. Well it has continued to happen and is not normal.
The other night I was standing onstage watching haze flow into the audience as I look up at my torch and realize it is blowing down stage. Well that explains it. So, between our two shows I tell the stage manager to tell the light tech to turn off the haze once I really start eating the fire. See the hazer has a fan that blows the haze and I take a long time before I put the fire in my mouth. Jokes and what not. As long as the fans aren't blowing I can hold a torch in my teeth and not burn my bottom lip. Yeah, I know it will shorten my life but it is the funniest routine I have right now p.s. I learned wrong by myself and then tranined with a pro. DON"T DO IT THAT WAY!! Everyone always asks what I put in my mouth. When I first learned, I put blisters! Will

Thanks TVI, that's lightened the post a bit!!! I tried double flame swallow last night, and I can say I also have a problem with the bottom lip, and I noticed that as I was doing it inside by the door from our garage, as I was looking up the smoke that came from inside from people smoking was going at a rate of knotes, I fixed the problem, like you, by having them close the window that was making the through draft, and now seem ok with multi flames. Apart from the fact that before I was using only my right hand, and now I use my left, it isn't used to doing the action, and every now and then I cath my lip with the metal, good job I ice it down!
keep it coming....... thanks, daz |

I need to take 3 04 4 15 minute respiratory treatment a day, each taking about 15minutes...At night I breath oxygen through a cannula, and my lung function is 38%... After doing fire for about 50 years I can tell you it adds up... I'm not sure you mastered it in a week, after a half century I'm still learning... The Café rules prevent telling you details,But you don't come close to having the control you need, or "vapor" would not be a problem. Slim

I don't beleive I said I have the control I need for vapour, or it would be simple, I just said that compaired to what it was when I started a week ago, it has now become a lot easier, not mastered it, no, I will NEVER master, not even close, but I feel I have done the best to my ability at this early stage in my learning. I am sorry to hear about your lungs but I probably wont be doing half of the things that would contricute to this. yes, I will have a problem later life, and I will have to exept that. thankyou, daz
