Hi
Here is a quote from "Carter beats the Devil" a great book by Glen David Gold: "Tom came, and when he saw the photo, he yelled 'No!' for in Houdini's photograph, he was wearing a red-as-rouge necktie..." "Few understood the ramifications, but those who did - the members of Sid LeProtti's So Different Jazz Band, for instance - agreed that a man who chained himself to milk cans... was certainly one to watch" Ok, I am one who doesn't understand the ramifications. Why was everyone getting excited about a picture of Houdini wearing a "red-as-rouge necktie?" Mark |

They were getting excited because color photographs weren't invented until nine years after Houdini's death

Well that just explains everything!
Thanks! Has anyone else read the book? What did they think? Mark |

I enjoyed the book alot! I love historic fiction, with the main character interacting with famous historic figures. (I guess 'Ragtime' was the first book to do that...). The descriptions of his magic act seem to be accurate to what I have read about stage magic back then.
If you haven't read Carter yet, definitely pick up a copy! marc |

Same reason we snicker when we see magicians waving red hankerchiefs or wearing purple sequinned outfits. Some people do funny things. No arguing tastes here.

All I could find that it was supposed to be released last summer and Jude Law was cast in the role of Carter.

I have the book on tape and it was fantastic! I can't recall that part though. Was it near the end? Somehow associated with the wine bottle?

I found it a very enjoyable read and would recommend it for summertime reading. If you can find a copy, I suggest that you first read "Carter the Great" by Mike Caveney to get the real scoop. It will make the fictionalized story more entertaining.

I stopped reading it halfway through as the authors interpretation of Houdini was so far off plumb that it spoiled the story for me. C'mon, Houdini actually helping out an up and coming magician with his professional career, please how far do you think you can stretch ones credulity?

It was Carter Beats the Devil (and Derren Brown's Pure Effect) that sparked my interest in the grand illusions from that period, so I have to say thanks for that. Of course I don't know enough about the 'magic' part of the book to comment on it, but I enjoyed the story and I thought combining fact and fiction like that was great!
BTW the 'red tie' is referred to earlier by Carter's brother and his friend Tom(?) and the way I read it was that they were suggesting Houdini was gay. |

I think it is Tom Cruise not Jude Law
