Does anybody out there have or use the remote board? I am serious about buying it, but cannot find any threads on it on the Café............HELP!!!! It always amazes me that children's entertainers invest so little money in their props. No illusionist would think twice about investing $5000 in a new illusion. I know they get payed more, but we work more!!

If you don't get a response for a review (there might not be any of those type of customers around here... you might find a lot that have seen it at a friends, or performed at a convention, etc... not many first hand experiences), then I recommend that you PM or e-mail Steve Axtell, and ask him to refer some customers of the remote control board to you. Recently, I asked about a review of a certain newer high-end marketing product I was interested in, and got no replies online. But I did get some e-mails from aquaintances & friends that were very helpful, who had read my forum thread. - Donald P.S. Yes, there are a lot of "illusionists" that would think twice about spending $5000 on a prop. That's why many of the lower-priced builders offer products (at an often inferior quality), and also why there are many threads talking about getting into illusions, yet stating that they don't want to spend more than $100-$350. Reminds me of a sign I once read: Quote: 1) Low price

I use the large drawing board and it works fine. I also bought a spare ungimicked board that people can inspect before the show. This makes the illusion even better.
As far as the sketchpad goes... I bought the smaller version note pad suprise and I can't use it. The gimmick makes a noise so you can't perform it close-up, and since the pad is small you can't perform it on a stage. This item sits in my closet. I don't know if the sketchpad makes a noise, but if it works on the same principal you wouldn't want to use it for close-up magic. I think you would be better off sticking with the magic drawing board. Mike |

I have the Axtell Remote Drawing Board. It's fantastic. If there is one slight drawback it's the noise it makes in a silent room. This can be masked by having music in the background, or by making sure you use a loud enough 'voice'. It also helps to have the audience just a little further from you/the board than you might normally allow. But this is a very minor issue compared to the benefits (To be fair, the noise issues are normally covered by crowd reaction anyway). The reactions I've had when performing, in particular on the initial movement when I'm off away rummaging for something in my case, have been astounding. Children AND adults. I got a couple of the Axtrax CDs when I got the board and found them useful to practice with, but they didn't really suit my performance style. I'm now studying ventriloquism (Maher Course; excellent) and was confident enough at Christmas to perform with the board, even having it sing Jingle Bells (with kids ringing sleigh bells - nice noise mask eh?). I tend to use a head-worn mic when performing to larger groups, and I have to say I needed it with the board. Not to mask any noise, but the constant audience reaction from first to last movement was too loud for my normal voice; without the mic I've had to scream to be heard! I like it, can you tell? If you can afford it, go for it. You won't be disappointed, especially if you can vent. I hope this is of some use. Feel free to PM if you want more info. Cheers FB

I own the large drawing board and have for several years.... I need a new plastic front it seems to have shrunk!!!
I have short arms, and think the smaller board may be more comfortable for me. But I first have to order a new plastic sheet for the big one! Is it easy to put the new one in?

I own the larger model and have used it in almost every show I do. There is this sort of thing about magicians and also about me, where we feel connected a bit to a particular prop and routine we do with it. There is this feeling that the prop and routine are both so universal in what I can do with it, that I get a great reaction no matter who the target audience is. For me the Drawing Board falls within this category.
My wife and I work a lot of festivals each year and working in this market, you learn to realize that you not only have to appeal to the children, but to all ages who are there watching you. You want to engage them and get them involved in the magic and the fun taking place on stage. The drawing board has always been one of my openers that I would use time and again just because I knew without a doubt that it would play so well and would immediately get the results of the audience having fun, getting to know me and the perfect opportunity of having the drawing itself introduce me to the entire audience. In this fashion, my drawing has become my own MC. It has worked wonders over the years. I also have a unique advantage as I am also a trained artist. You certainly do not have to be an artist to get a great effect with this prop. I want to make that perfectly clear. You do not have to be an artist at all and it will work wonderfully well. However, as an artist, it has really opened doors for me, as I can customize and tailor every show to directly meet the theme of the event. If it is a holiday, I theme the drawing appropriately. If it is a b-day party, I draw the b-day kid and have him come to life. For libraries I draw a dictionary that tells people about the magic found in books. The idea I am trying to express here is that this one single prop holds with it a wealth of possibilities that are really endless. Just open your imagination and except creativity. Kyle

Hi guys... I got the smaller sized version of the Axtell magic drawing board and I love it to bits!!! however, I got a bit of a problem holding on to it to my left side while performing.
Basically, it gets uncomfy with the metal edge sharping pressing into my arm and I'm afriad if I position it at certain angles, I'd be blocking it from the view of some of the kids. Please advise the best handling methods for the mini version, as it wasn't really covered in the given instructions Your help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!! Ning ps: Has anyone here used any other marker than Expo2 and it worked ok? They don't carry it here in SG, so I'd have to purchase them online if these are the only markers (yes, I know they come highly recommended) that work best and there are no other workable alternatives. Cheers!!! |

There may be other alcohol-free dry erase markers out there, but I am not aware of them. If you use a dry erase marker with alcohol it will leave a permanent mark on the MDB due to the plastic that is used on the front.

Hi Marvello
Thanks for the fast reply! Will note the tip about the alcohol-free dry erase markers... any suggestions on the board placement? I'm right handed so it rests on the crook of my left arm so it's nicely visable but gets quite uncomfortable after awhile. Any suggestions? Thanks much! Ning |

I was just on the expo markers site and it says that "Expo2 Low Odor Dry Erase Markers contain an alcohol-based ink" but I received this type of marker along with the board. What is a guy to do?

Hello Ning (Ni Hao),
When I lived in Taiwan I was able to buy "Pentel Maxi-Flo" white board markers which also work very well for me. I used to buy them from any stationary store there. They have two sizes and were not too expensive for me. Hope that's a help. all the best, JoJo

Expo2 changed their name. They are now called "Expo low odor". Same marker, just a different name. I emailed Steve and he said they are both safe to use.

Thanks for the tip Jojo (xie xie ni!) I know stores carry Pentel here, so will look out for it next time I'm at the store. A quick question for all, has anyone here changed the plastic sheet for their boards yet? Cheers

Its ok Marvello, I was just making sure as I don't want to ruin the cover, I am yet to use it in a show so I don't want to replace parts before I get a chance to perform with it.

So how long does the screen typically last till it needs to be replaced? Has anyone used the same piece for years? Thanks much!

SoftScrub will clean the dry erase up nicely - good as new. Axtell sells replacement plastic if you need one. I have never replaced mine.

Time out!
Use the Expo2 / Low Ordor markers because they will erase off our plastic. They ARE Alcohol based. (Not Alcohol free). Most dry erase markers (like the regular expo markers) are KEYTONE based, and will not erase from our plastic. Remote Control Customers can be found at http://www.axtell.com/rmdb.html they are all over the page! You can buy extra plastic for any size Magic Drawing Board at http://www.axtell.com/illusions.html See the Accessories section. Ax

Steve- thanks for the final ultimate clarification. That is actually what I was trying to say before but got low-odor and non-alcohol confused.
Alcohol=GOOD Ketone=BAD thanks again.
