New Derren Brown special on the way.
It's due to be broadcast on the 29th of May this year and, from what I've been told, is essentially a televised live show: Nothing added or taken away. I understand it will feature some of the stuff from his first tour. Looking forward to this one.

Great news. As I haven't seen any of Derren's live shows, I am also looking forward to this special.

Ooooo! You lads across the pond are so fortunate to have Derren Brown! I LOVE his televised stuff (what I've seen of it) and I've got his book, "Absolute Magic" which is simply BRILLIANT both for its insight and its incredible humor. (He writes in the vein of Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, and Neil Gaiman-- or so I think.)
I really need to get "Pure Effect" sometime. I hear it's stunning.
There she was, a dodgy old prune in a tiara, rushing at me waving a sword. Do all knights suffer this whilst being made?

The show, according to reliable sources features a number of effects from Derren's first tour of 2003/4. Having seen the original tour show I think people are in for a real treat. The following press release is on Derren's website:
"Derren Brown: The Gathering - Sunday 29th May, 10PM, Channel 4 Be prepared for plenty of Derren Brown's brand of magic and mind-games in a specially made recording of a live show shot in a mystery location in front of an invited audience which includes cab drivers, famous faces, psychics, magicians and psychologists. This one hour fusion of magic, suggestion, psychology and misdirection will give the cynics among you the chance to decide - is he a fraud or should he be burnt at the stake? Famous faces randomly selected to take part include: broadcaster Krishnan Guru Murthy, The League of Gentlemen's Reece Shearsmith & top chef Jean Christophe Novelli. Other celebrities in the audience include Jonathan Ross, Simon Pegg, Al Murray and Sarah Alexander. Derren comments: "I've always loved performing live and of course it gives people a chance to see that everything's fair. It's not something I've done on TV before, although it is a taste of what I do on tour. Hopefully it will be a very memorable evening for all concerned". Looking forward to it. Terry |

I wouldn't presume from the number of posts someone has or the content within that there are no magicians present. The conceitedness and scornful tone of some of the contributions on this forum are often the reason that people are reluctant to contribute. From (for the record) an experienced professional magician. |

This show sounds great. Seems like Derren is draging magic and mentalism back up to its glory days. It all sounds very Houdini-styled.

If I can get free it is my intention to be in the audience. I'll let you know how it goes.

Unfortunately the show was taped on Wednesday 18 May in front of a specially selected audience. It is a misrepresentation on their part calling it a live show. I take it to mean that it will be televised as taped without (extensive) editing of the sort we are used to with Trick Of The Mind. Terry |

I really want to see a copy this as well. (I'm in the U.S.)
A lot of people seem to have been disappointed by his most recent TV series, at least in comparison to the first. (Because of "stunts" like the nail-in-the nose, rather than, well, Mind Control.) I hope this is a "return to form." And since I've not seen his live show, I'm particularly interested in this broadcast; it's the closest thing I'll get until he embarks on a World Tour. |

All people who want a copy after it airs, PM me: I'm having a helluva time encoding DVDs to play on a standalone player, but if your PCs have DVD drives I will certainly hook you up with a file-full one.
