Forgive me if this has been discussed at length elsewhere but for some reason my computer refuses to allow me access to the [search] function.
I have spent hours on the Internet attempting to find replacement rubber bands for a handful I have been using since last summer, but I cannot find anything comparable. The ones I am using are 110 mm x 2 mm. I would be perfectly happy if they were a little bit shorter (say, 100 mm) but I am finding it impossible to source rubber bands that are 2 mm wide. 3 mm is too wide and 1 mm seems to me a little bit too narrow, as they are less visible. I have even managed to find size charts from various producers, yet they all seem to be either 1 mm or 3 mm wide. Does anybody have any suggestions? I know such rubber bands exist because I have some! I just can't find a source for them any more. I would also like to find some rubber bands of various colors but of matching sizes. It seems that everybody who produces multi-colored rubber bands has a different color for each size, and even then you have to buy mixed bags rather than bags of a single size. Has anybody managed to find colored rubber bands of a decent size for magic? I am looking ideally for a UK producer or distributor, though this is not essential. (And it's no use suggesting I go to visit specific shops -- the nearest large town to me is Inverness, which is about five hours travel south!) Thanks for the help. |

I don't know one millimeter from another. What rubber band tricks do you do? Al

In the U.S. the bands are identified by a number rather than size. If it's for "Crazy Man's Handcuffs" the bands coded #16, #18, or #19 work well. Michael Ammar recommends #19 but I find they're almost too big.
#16 is 2.5 inches x 1/16 #18 is 3 inches x 1/16 My favorite #19 is 3.5 inches x 1/16 I bought a brand called "Brites" that has a variety of sizes and colors and they look much better than the average brown bands. After sorting out the obvious bad sizes, it still left me with plenty to work with.

I have also noticed not all #19 bands are created equal, some are bigger than others. Right now I'm useing gold #19 I bought from http://www.elmagicshop.com that are a little smaller, translucent, and just right for my hands. Al

Silly me. I should have included size numbers and/or inches.
Size 19 is 3 1/2 inches long, but I find this a little too small. I prefer at least 4 inch rubber bands, and possibly even a teeny bit longer. Size 20 is 4 inches long and would probably suit me well. The reason I have not purchased size 20 is that on the size chart I discovered they were listed as being 1 mm wide which is close to 1/32" rather than 1/16". The size chart did not list the Imperial width. I think you have perhaps answered my question, and size 20 would probably do for me. I find it interesting that so many people mention size 19; I have moderately wide hands but they are not unusually large, yet I find size 19 to be a little bit small. Al - in answer to your question, I do CMH, snapped-and-restored rubber band, impromptu ring on rubber band, impromptu linking rubber bands (Dan Harlan), a rather nice ring-travels-uphill-along-snapped-rubber-band trick shown to me by a friend a few years ago (name and source unknown), and have recently started mucking around with Dan Harlan's travelling tips. (Not all at the same time and not all for the same people, naturally! I have found that CMH goes down so well that, especially in walkabout situations, I often get asked to repeat it so I have worked up a small repertoire to prevent me from having to rely on the one trick.) With travelling tips in particular, I find a longer rubber band is necessary as you need to stretch them between the fingers quite a distance, add an extra stretch to set up for the actual effect, and still have enough stretch to make the sudden movements without snapping the band. I'm very interested to know whether I am alone in needing something longer than size 19. Dave - with the Brites are there rubber bands of the same size in different colours or are they all colour-coded according to their dimensions? And when you use size 18 are you doing just CMH or other effects as well? Malcolm |

Malcolm: do a web search for Alliance Pale Crepe Gold. Many large office supply stores carry them in their on-line stores. These have been recommended many times on this and other forums. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Steve. I'll have a look for those.
I'm still curious to know whether other people find size 19 too small. I've seen them recommended more often than any other size, yet despite not having enormous hands I still find them too small, especially for effects such as Travelling Tips. Dave -- do you know the name of the manufacturer for Brites? Thanks. |

I found some really nice colored rubber bands at Wal-Mart in the hair products. They were labeled rubber bands that wouldn't break your hair or something like that. They were super stretchy and much higher quality than office supply rubber bands.

Malcom, You must have huge hands to need bands larger than #19. I'm using #19 for CMH and Pinnacle and find them great. They can be bought at Staples or Office Max For less than $4 a pound and that's a lot of rubber bands. I don't know if you have these stores in the UK but there must be office supply stores. Good luck. Art

And when you use size 18 are you doing just CMH or other effects as well? I don't have the package in front of me, but there was a variety of sizes, 16, 18, 19, and three others that were the same diameter but wider. I don't remember their size numbers. Each size was it's own color. 16's were blue, 18's orange and 19's yellow. The fat ones were green, purple and pink, again each color was the same size so you could sort the sizes by their corresponding color. I can see now from your list of effects why you would need larger bands. I use the 18's (orange) exclusively for CMH. Brites are made by Alliance, the makers of "Pale Crepe Gold" mentioned earlier. I found a link for the package I bought here

Congratulations, you have just answered the question of the day. Where can I get some quality, inexpensive rubber bands in bright colors? The answer is at the Office Depot. I thought that the boomerang rubber band trick would be easies to spot if I could find some different colored rubber bands, and you came up with the perfect answer. Tanks buddy Al

Yep, Office Depot and Wal Mart, the two largest magic supply stores in the country.

After looking at rubber band charts I have concluded that the largest 1/16" wide rubber band they make is the 3 1/2" in diameter #19. The only 4" diameter rubber band is the 1/8" wide #34, which I'm afraid is too fat for rubber band magic, so I suggest you experiment with #19 because some are much bigger than others, and they are the only game in town 4U. Good luck Al

This is copied from Michael Ammar's web about the ideal rubber band -
Feel the difference a quality rubber band makes. These have more life, elasticity and strength than the average band. They have a consistant quality - with each one as good as the one before. And a softer stretch for easier use. They are a soft, pale crepe rubber band - size is #16 (which Michael recommends for all rubber band magic). Tried and true, these are the best. I agree with you the difference between an ordinary rubber band and a quality rubber band is big. Dave Vandraken came up with the quick solution Brite multi colored extremely high quality 1 1/2 oz box for under $1.50. My hands are probibly a bit bigger than yours but Brite availible at Office Max, Staples, and WalMart has a size and color for every trick. I use the #19 for CMH, and Rhing thing, and the #32, #33 I use for a lively boomerang rubber trick, and #64 I use for found link. Have fun Al

Having used the bands Russ Niedzwiecki (of pinnacle fame) sells, I won't touch anything else. They are simply the best.
I think you can find them at http://www.magicbuzz.net/ |

The answer to all magic related rubber band questions is Wal Mart and Office Depot. Sizes, colors and the fact that the magic shops your probably buying them from just run down to these stores and buy the exact ones they sell you. I love magic shops and am a junkie to be sure, but for things like rubber bands and paper clips, stick with the source.

I agree with you about the bands Russ Niedzwiecki sells for pennacle. Their great. I went through a whole bag of them. Then I ran into a post on Magic Café. You can get exactly the same band from OFFICE MAX for about $5.00 for a 1 lb. box of these high quality 100% rubber bands ( they do NOT carry these in their retail stores ),,,only by mail order on their web site. You need to order #18 or #19 ALLIANCE GOLD PALE CREPE. I forget who posted the original info but I found it to be accurate. |

If you go to the store to order the rubber bands from the catalog, and pay for them in advance they will ship them to you for free.
