I greatly enjoy the "instant gratification" of e-books (I rarely need to search text and rarely enjoy reading pages of text at the computer), but, really, give me a well-produced bound book any day. E-books are accessible now, but given the history of human management of computer technology (and its likely continued course), 10 or 15 years from now, one may have a very difficult time accessing one's present e-books, and I don't relish the thought of having to have my e-books bound so that they'll last. Classics deserve more substantial treatment.

Mr. Osterlind mentioned something about a new book "Principles of magic". To me, the biggest ever gap for someone to fill in the area of magic is this of principles and presentation of magic.
I see many magicians performing exactly the same routines and most of them are so boring and flat while a few of them you get to love them from the vey first minutes of their performance. There is some work on this issue (Osterlind, Tamariz, Derren Brown, Brad Christian etc etc) but nothing like a strong and thorough seminar (in a book or more preferably a movie - or maybe a combination of both) that will gradually and methodically transform a magician's act into a "most wanted" one that people will love to watch. So Mr. Osterlind if you go for it, kick it hard and it will be one of the nicest presents you would (again) offer to the magic community. bests, aware |

Richard,
I'd like to add my thoughts into this one. Please, by all means, do the book. Rick

Hi Richard,
I am usually as amazed by your writing as I am by your mentalism. Your work obviously comes from the heart and that accounts for how well it connects with people. Often, after reading something you have written, I am struck by how simple, deceptively simple, your ideas are. As you have pointed out in another thread, this simplicity took years to evolve. Your "Principles of Magic" would, I am sure, be worthwhile in any format. I look forward to it. Best wishes, Mark Weinkle |

Let me be selfish in saying,I'd like a physical book as opposed to an e-book , especially if it's got a lot of pages, I have trouble looking at a screen for long periods, I'm prone to headaches and migrances and do my best to avopid them. I'm not even ment to leve the house with out shades.

One more vote for a nice, hardbound book - a good solid weighty volume of work.

I'll buy ebooks if that's all that's available, but I prefer printed books when possible.

Well no better time to jump in after a month and-a-half of not really having anything to say and finally make my first post.
I have just finished reading "Making Magic Real" and am into the middle of "Making Real Magic". It is truly inspiring and some of the best advice I have read in all of the books that I have on magic. And like most, I have quite a few that I have picked up over the past 15 years. I purchased the "Mind Mysteries" DVD set and have found that viewing them in conjunction with reading the books is as great a lesson in presentation as one is likely ever to get. I live near Palm Springs and we are fortunate here to have had some of the finest magicians around decide to semi-retire here. Karrell Fox was one and years ago, we used to gather on Saturday mornings at the local Magic Shop, and Karrell would end up having teach-ins for all present. As I would do the pieces that Karrell would show us, he would always say: "Don, you have to believe it!" I always felt that I was probably screwing up my face and producing beads of sweat on my forehead and appearing more like I was taking a math quiz than performing magic. Karrell was a wonderful teacher and always made you feel like you were indeed making magic. Richard's "Making Magic Real" though has been such a well-written discourse of performance just in the first reading that I feel in the "Magic State of Mind" as I haven't for several years (though some of those years were spent as the middle-aged guy back in college). Anyway, Richard, thanks for the shot of magic and to get back on subject - I'll will hereafter devour any of your writings; e-book or stone tablet that you choose to grace us with! Don |

I used to shoot high powered rifles with the Utah State Rifle and Pistol Association. The 1,000 yard match with open sights requires absolute concentration and relaxation, something I try to incorporate in all my endeavors, magic included!
