Hi all,
As a beginner to the world of illusions I am very interested in original presentations of standard effects (eg sawing in half, vanishing dove cage). What is your favourite presentation of an illusion you have seen? How do you go about creating an original presentation for your illusions? thanks George |

One way is to go with the "Character" you're portraying...
As such, Criss Angel's sawing in half MUST be different than say if Sylvester The Jester were to perform it... Even if they were to use the same technique... So, ask yourself what's your character on stage... Imho...

Hi Pakar Ilusi,
Thanks very much for your reply. Yes, I see what you mean about portraying a character - Like Cardini who was a tipsy engligh gentlemen walking home from a society affair and was amazed by the cards that unexpectedly appeared in his hands. I suppose presentation is the most important aspect of illusions. thanks again George |

Pakar's advise is right on the button.
What I would do, if I wanted to do a specific trick, would be to put it aside and start with the basics. Huh??? Okay, say I definitely, absolutely want to do the dancing cane. Never mind why -- I just want to do it. Okay, fine. Look at the gadget, play with it a bit, and then put it away. Foggeddaboudit for a couple of days. Then come back, look at the basic scheme, and go, "Okay, so I want to have a stick floating on the stage with me. Hmmmmm... Nah, I want it to dance on stage with me. Really dance, not just float. What would a dancer do with a floating partner?" Then I'd let my imagination go. Just go. Think about dancers, think about different types of sticks they would use (why does it have to be a cane?), think about different things different dancers would do. At this point I'd rent a couple of Fred Astaire movies and just sit back and dream and scheme. But I'm not Fred Astaire... okay, so what would Gene Kelly do? Or Gregory Hines? Or any number of others? A few days of this dreaming and simmering would give me something that's totally personal, since I used my own imagination to come up with it. Better yet, it would give me options, so if I found out that someone else is already doing something similar, I could fall back on Plan B, or C, or D.
