I have been wanting to make up an old effect by Geoffery Buckingham that requires dozens of red and black tissue paper "pips" (spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs).
It is extrememly arduous to take scissors and try to cut dozens and dozens of little pips out of tissue paper, but if I had something that works like a paper hole punch, (only instead of making round holes, the holes would be shaped like the four pips) this would make the effect a whole lot easier to construct! Of course you would discard the holes, and use the parts that are punched out (the scraps) Does anybody know if such a device is available anywhere on the market and where? Thanks!
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

I was at WalMart yesterday, and saw some paper punch sets that had various designs. One was a clover shape, but I don't think it was symetrical. However, if there is a manufacturer listed on the product, a phone call or email may net some info.

Craft stores now commonly sell punches that are shaped like all four different card pips. Check in the area where they have the scrap-booking supplies.

I don't know the effect but the pips are the size of (or smaller then)the holes punched out of the paper. Will that work? Lyndel is right on, the craft store is where to find them.

The effect is Buckinghams trick where you "blow" the pips off a deck of cards one suit at a time, they go sailing merrily into the air as you blow, and as you do, each corresponding suit in the deck becomes blank! Oh, what was the name of it? Oh yeah! now I remember! it was "Showers of Pips" I made it up years ago, but it was a royal pain in the butt cuting out all those tiny little pips! Man were talking carpal tunnel just from doing it once!

Then I'm not sure if the hole punches will work because the pips would be very small.

They make them approx. the same size as the pips on a card... Don't be too concerned if it is a smidgen too big or too small. Nobody is going to pick up a pip and say, "Hey, that's a good trick, but this pip looks like it might be about 5 millimeters too big to have really came off that card!"

Instead of using paper, try the thin red and black plastic film that you can get at art supply stores. That way you can recover some of the pips and clean them easier.
Just a thought. |
