Reading through some magic magazines from the 1940s last night,I realised that very little is different to now. The debates on the ethics of revealing, the way in which effects are described etc are no different today.
Just pondering on what the biggest difference is. Perhaps the internet & all that potential for magicians from all over the world to "meet up"? What do you think? I found the magazines absorbing, and will be actively to find some more. Can anyone reccomend the best sources (in the UK)? |

Biggest difference in magazines from days gone by... no websites.
Best source for finding them is probably Ebay. ~michael

Also try to find reprints - for example you can buy "Apocalypse"- and "Magic Menu"-magazin. Also have a look at some CD-ROMs - for example here: http://www.martinbreese.com (he is a UK seller), with scans of old magazines.

Thanks for the pointers as to where to get reprints / ebooks etc. I will be checking them out but to be honest I just love handling the original article, complete with musty smell & scribbled notes in the margins. That's more magical for me

I don't think there is one dealer who has all the CD-ROMs....

The Cd Roms are mainly made by a guy in Texas. I don't have his name on hand. But I have the digital Sphinx and it is great. I can even read it on a plane.
But I understand about the old magazines, I just box 6 boxes of old magazines at a convention and have been going through them all. I xerox article or tricks that interest me and then put them in three ring notebooks by category. Most of the older magazines did not have a good (if any) index system. That is another plus for the digital version is the cross references. I also have complete file of the new Conjuror's, Linking Ring and Genii. They are not bound as I find them easier to look through and copy out of. They are all stored in magazine type files. Richard

Jinx and Phoenix are great, but you must also check out Hugard's Magic Monthly (I have all of these on CD, which is very convenient and cost effective). If you're interested in more recent (but discontinued)publications I highly (HIGHLY) recommend investing in the entire series of Apocalypse, Richard's Almanac, and The Looking Glass vol. 1 - 4. If you're planning to subscribe to one or two current publications I would recommend Antimony (and if you're into mentalism check out Mind Over Magic).
