I was looking at the different messages about Cellini... I’ve known him for over 19 years now... I last saw him at a festival in Zurich, in 1999...
He has since more or less retired to Greensboro N. Carolina which is his hometown... Jim took me on tour with him to Europe in 1986... I haven’t left Europe except to go to W. Australia ever since... Jim also introduced me to Slydini and Frank Garcia ...Slydini said Jim was his best student... And he has been a great teacher for me too... His health isn’t good but knowing him the way I do he will stay at it till the very end... As far as David Blaine goes... I once visited his website, and on his post, a message page, asked the question, Exactly when was it you were a STREET PERFORMER?... It’s an honest Question because he appeared on TV, Myself and all the other Street workers had never heard of Him... Well I got Hate mail from confused 14 year-olds and his multitude of Hispanic (DAMEON) fans... All I asked was a Question... and I was cursed at and called stupid and a lot of other things... I later found out from Rocco (D’Lights) Salano.. That David is related to an excutive for NBC... HMMMMMMMMM???? No I guess that doesn’t have anything to do with him getting a fat contract for TV work... NAWWWWWHHH!!! Anyway... I’ve worked with and am still performing with the best the streets will ever offer up... I know Sheridan, Gazzo, all of them... and David Blaine better thank his lucky stars and his contact at NBC... because otherwise that Magic shop stuff he got away with in the begining was not useable or workable on the REAL STREETS... Thank you very much Piccard for that very informative data on both Brother Cellini and Kid Blaine.
I used to live in North Carolina in 1989-1991 and it is a nice quiet relaxing area for anyone wanting just rest and good fishing. Will you please say, "HI" to the Olde Pro Master for me and keep up the good work my Brother! Please stick around and share some more of those memories of yours my friend. WELCOME! Jim Cellini is currently living in North Carolina and no longer performs on the streets.. or at least rarely. He often tells me he needs a new body do to some health issues, so the odds of you ever seeing him perform is well... very small.
However, he is currently working on a series of videos that will explain how to work the streets, such as gathering a crowd, keeping them and getting the money. This video will teach you how to be a street performer and it's not a magic video. There is also another video in the works of him doing his street set on Bourbon Street and will have all the explanations plus tons of stuff about magic on the streets. Both videos will be available this year and are highly recommended.. Jim Cellini is a master, a Slydni student, and my teacher. It's my honor to know him. He's a very giving man who truly knows what magic is supposed to look like. The art is his life and if you ever have an opportunity to see him work or even lecture, which is also rare, do it because he’s the very best that there is. It's beautiful to see him work. The flowing style, his hands, and how to move. Trust me, he's very best. I’m going to miss him greatly when he is gone. |

Who will be distributing the Video? In other words, how will I be able to get these?
I realize they aren't yet available, but what kind of distribution will they have? Any info you might know would be helpful. BroDavid _________________ If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.

I know that Ron McMillan in England produced and distributed the last video he made, don’t know about the new ones... You can check with Zauberladen in Zurich Switzerland

I had the honor to meet Cellini in Greensboro, NC, last year at the SEAM convention where I was appearing.
The late Frank Garcia called Cellini the greatest of the street performers. His book, The Royal Touch, is now available. The website in the Linking Ring ad is: http://www.zauberladen.com cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Every so often someone sells a Cellini video lecture on ebay. Is it safe to say I should snatch it up next time it appears?

I’ve never seen Cellini, but if he was able to work Bourbon Street successfully, he’s got my utmost respect. As someone who lived in New Orleans for quite awhile and played occasional gigs on Bourbon Street (music gigs, that is), I know you’ve got to be some kind of performer to get that crowd interested in anything other than liquor and debauchery. Hat's off to Cellini for pulling it off.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

The first of a series of videos has now been completed. This video is about how to perform on the streets, such as gathering a crowd, keeping them and getting the money. Also included is info on clothes, hats, how hats help create character, and tables. Plus a lot of good stuff. Also included is a 10 minute street performance by Sonny Holiday. It's broken down into why he's doing and saying the things he's saying and if you have an interest in performing on the streets, this is the video for you...
As far as distribution, McMillan in England will have the video likely within a couple of weeks. Tt will be available in the U.S. but, we are still negotiating a deal for the distribution.I would think it will be soon. I hope this answers your questions. ted |

I'm guessing Tannen's in NYC will have these? Otherwise, what would be the best way to get a copy of these?

Piccard,
I visited your site a few days ago and left a message on your guest book. Thanks for the message back. You do seem to know everybody. I could spend hours just listening to what Slydini and Cellini are (and were) like. They were (and are) the masters. I must see YOU perform someday. Actually I did a bit on some of your clips. So, what was Slydini like? Sable

Sable,
He was short. Okay, cheap gag (but he WAS short!) Slydini was a great guy who was always "on". In his later years (the only time I knew him) he was performing at Imam's Mostly Magic in New York. This frail old man would come out on stage and, as he began, the years just fell away and he wove a spell of magic. One Sunday, my wife and I were at his apartment in mid-Manhattan and he did the (ungimmicked) linking pins for her at a distance of about six inches! You couldn't tell what color the walls of his apartment were because they were so covered with awards and plaques. (Eventually I'm going to have to mention this:) He was a second-cousin of mine; his father and my granfather were brothers. (His real name being Quintino Marucci) But we had never met until just a few years before his death. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Peter,
Wow. I'm going to have to run into you at a convention one of these days, see you perform and pow-wow later at the closest coffee shop. Slydini...well let's just say he's meant a lot to my work. Thanks. Sable

Hey Tom (Piccard)
I see that you haven't posted in a few months. I hope that you're doing well. Maybe I'll see you somewhere in Europe, this Summer? I'm always happy to hear your stories, and I can always use some help with my handlings. Peace, Bro. Eric

I just got a copy of the Cellini Video, and want to say that it is everything that Ted Brainard (in his posting in this thread) said it was!
Finally! The Review is below. BroDavid Review of Cellini Video "Art of Street Performing Vol I." Also available at http://devicesofmagic.com This Video was not what I expected! But it WAS exactly what I needed!!! I expected to see Cellini in performance more, and I held fast to that expectation until I saw the Video, and got a great deal more, really important information delivered by Jim Cellini Himself. For most of the Video Jim just sits comfortably and tells you what you need to know. It is like having him right there with you, sharing the secrets of countless years of his experience and that of others. His Points are then reinforced by the video of a wide array of other Street Performers demonstrating the point just presented. He talks about Gathering a crowd, tells several ways to do it, and then you see a number of others do it. Some with words, some with other means, and all in a wide variety of styles. But all accomplishing the point in their own style. That is how the whole video goes; 1. Tell and 2. Explain, and then 3. Show a lot of working examples. You may actually see the point being illustrated in the style that you use, but if not, you will surely see it done in a way that you can adapt to your style. No, it is not 60 minutes of Jim Cellini performing his art on the street! But like me, you will just need to, "just get over it". And appreciate this video for what it is! I firmly believe that this video is the single most important teaching on "The Art of Street Performing" ever produced. Many major points are covered, and each of them is absolutely vital to the understanding of what it takes to perform on the Street successfully. Gathering a Crowd, Keeping a Crowd, What to Perform, How Long to Perform, Getting and Keeping the Money, but that isn’t all: Clothes, hats, tables. plus, and more,… plus a 10 minute street performance by Sonny Holiday.... with a complete; “what and why” on his performance. There is much to be learned on this video. One nugget in the "what to wear" portion of the tape, that explains how Jim gets his topit to remain "open" and ready to vanish items, is worth the cost of the Video to me. I have been looking for an answer to keeping the topit open - ever since I knew what a topit was! And Jim has a simple, painless solution - that I am already working on adapting to fit my performance apparel. Some of the things on the tape, I already knew from my own observation and years of trial and error in public speaking and just plain street hustling. But there was much that I had never considered at all. So I learned a number of new things, and I was reminded of the importance of some more. But to me, the greatest value of the video was the fact that the basics were outlined in such logical steps with good visual confirmation by examples in a variety of styles. I loved the way Jim went through the different tables/trunk/bags/etc. That covered a lot of ground in the kind of thing you usually have to personally live through, or if you are really lucky - know someone who can tell you – or you buy this video! Bottom, I think that any Street Performer who has worked the streets for more than 4-5 years, probably knows a lot of what is on the Video. But he/she has had to learn it, the hard way - and then probably still doesn’t know everything on this video. So there is something for them to learn here. But for those who are just starting out - and don’t want to stumble along for 4-5 years before they learn the basics - this Video will be a true Blessing!!! This video will kickstart their Street career with the greatest possible chance for success by employing these well presented principles and approaches. I hope this Review helps you decide on whether or not this video is for you. BroDavid

Well, I am honored to know so many folks... However, I was unaware of knowing such heavy Hitters. OK I did... I am being modest.
Hello Ted, I didn't know you hung out here. Peter, Good seeing you again... can't wait till our next meeting... BTW.. were you made aware that Chris Ball passed on shortly after the SEAM convention? As for the video... TED, you did not tell me it was out! Enigma
You got to stand for something or you will fall for anything .... unless you are tired and you need to lay down or at least sit down then it is ok not to stand, my own opinion of course.

I met Cellini about 16 years ago in New Orleans. I was approching Jackson Square when I saw this guy in a gypsy outfit with a leather apron tied around his waist. I was with my wife and said to her "that has to be Jim Cellini." I had read about him in a brief paragraph in a Frank Garcia book.
I had a great visit with Jim. He was very approchable and generous with his magic. I was an oil field diver in those days and lived near New Orleans. I made it a point to check in the fall to see if Jim had arrived at Jackson Square. After a few years he quit coming. |

I had the honor of hosting Jim Cellini at a lecture for the IBM in Salt Lake City. All I can say is, everything ever stated about this man is under the mark. He has to be one of the kindest, gentlest men I have ever had the pleasure of being in company with. To any one considering his videos, books, or most importantly his lecture, just do it! You'll be glad you did!
