I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum, but how (and how much) do you break in a new deck of cards before going into your typical routine? When I start doing an 'Up the Ladder' type false shuffle with a brand new deck, for example, the cards are floating on top of each other like a puck on an air hockey table! Is this common, or is there a technique to work around this? I mean, does anyone (besides maybe Darwin Ortiz) just start their usual routine with a pristine deck of cards?

Just make sure you grab the cards in time when you do an up teh ladder, if you don't grab, yes they will glide like they are on ice...

I usually just give the deck a few good riffle shuffles to mix up the cards a bit. The cards I prefer to use don't need much breaking in.

It should never mnatter. You know what you can and cannot do as you develop your routines. Sometimes I will open or have the audience open a brand new deck and go right into the show. Other times, I'll perform with cards I've been using for awhile.

My uhderstanding of a technique for quicker breaking in of a deck is to riffle shuffle them alternately face up and face down.

Couple shuffles, few cuts, maybe go through a routine in practice.

I've recently been practicing the one handed riffle shuffle but mangage to keep spilling the cards as I try to get my index finger between the two segments. Is this purely due to unfamiliar handling or (as is the thread subject) because I'm using a new (Bicycle) deck am I making it harder for myself?

It could very well be the fact that you are using a new deck. I have problems doing the pass when I try it with a new deck. Something that has been suggested to me is rub the front and backs of the cards on carpet. I havent tried this, But who knows it might work.

I may give it a go, I guess it could create friction by charging the cards so to speak. If I haven't forgotten all the physics I was taught I think this probably works with plastic coated cards.

I do maybe like 12 ohs's, and then lots of dribbles, some fans, just beat the deck good.
I like cards.

Throw them into the washing machine, on the "delicate" setting. Hang dry using clothes pins, then dust them with your favorite talcum powder.
After this treatment, you can't use them in card tricks but they smell fantastic. |

I talk dirty to them.. but some decks fight back so I give them a stern talkign to and that straighten them up good.
