Okay, everyone who knows me by now knows that I'm a gimmick freak, of sorts.. or at least, a propmaster. One of things that bizarrists do best is to take props, even old, run of the mill, even off-the-shelf tricks, and make something or something new out of it.
This has got to be one of the more interesting things I've come across in a while. I'm trying to imagine uses for this, as a reveal to a question, or a card, etc.. If you move fast enough in the dark, the "wand" would probably be invisible all together. http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/7548/

I like the headline on the site:
"Scan your doodle and flash you friends" Now that sounds like a party! |

I'd use this as a drawing duplication effect. Have one of the spectators draw something on a pad with a heavy marker so the lines would be clear. After scanning that drawing on the sly, I'd burn or tear up the drawing in front of all of the spectators. When the dark portion of the seance was on, then I'd produce the drawing in the air.
I think I'm going to get this and noodle around with it. It has great possibilities! |

I don't think it would do a tarot card, but you could store the name. It MIGHT be useful in a dark seance if the lights on it aren't to bright, but I doubt it.I could think of a couple of things to do with a "regular routine" but not so much in our realm. Not to much high tech bizzare.

Oo. I like the pen just for the heck of it.
If you could palm it. That would be perfect, just wave your hand on a wall and the prediction appears. As I think everyone has said. So, if I was redundant please forgive me. Your friend, ~Mayo

'Twould be even better if the LED was red - then you could pluck the drawing from the air as a pixel or an idea, and 'magically' transform it into the original image.
Mystic, do you have this? Is the reproduction direction specific (i.e. - can you produce the image backwards)?

Misty, I haven't bought one, but I would think you could scan the target backwards, say, right to left rather than left to right, and that would do the trick, since it scans in a serial fashion. Pretty much the same principle applies with a flatbed scanner, if you reverse the orientation of the document you scan, it comes out upside down or whatever.
They don't mention it, but you'd probably have to wave this thing back and forth at just the right speed, or the characters wouldn't display quite right. One last thing - I'm sure you could trim a piece of red gel filter material, and fit it over the orange LEDs to get your red color - then break out the d'lites ! and man .. I thought I kept late hours !

Well, I bought one to play with last night (this morning), so I'll let you know how the LED to red thing works out. I'm thinking it would be most effective with an assistant, from whom you 'borrow' the pen - that way THEY can scan the image while you misdirect, and you never have to touch the drawing.
Whaddya think?

That'll work. Expecially if you what you're displaying is something forced, you'll already know what needs to be scanned (and so will your assistant).

Why bother scanning it live, if you're forcing it? Depending on what's being forced, you could scan it in ahead of time and then just use the memory function to make sure the right display is active.

Not to change the subject....but is that USB memory pen what I think it is? Does it remember what is written?
Perhaps the scan pen can be used as a subliminal device while you are talking or something? Wave it around a little and drop a few subC forces...?

Slim,
If you're talking about this thing: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/635f/ It's just a pen which has some flash memory (and USB plug) attached on the top. The pen & the memory don't interact in any way. There's a lot of weird packaging going on with such drives: you can even buy plastic sushi which works a portable USB flash memory drive. |

That's it....and that's too bad..... Don't they have pens that remember what they write? I think that I saw one once, but it looked very weird.
Thanks Dave

Slim, there is such a pen, Logitech makes it, although it reportedly doesn't work all that well. Well, maybe it does now - there appears to be a version 2 now.

Silverfire - scanning a force ahead of time would be the most practical method, yes, but I was talking about revealing a drawing the audience member makes on the spot. That's why I suggested an assistant scan it in for you - that way you never touch the drawing - just 'divine' it through an everyday object.
Have one of these on the way (along with a gun that shoots marshmallows)- will let you know how efficient it is as soon as it arrives. Also: I found a kit online that makes hologram images. Not Star Wars holograms - the silver ones you often see on stickers. How cool a promo item would THAT make?
