Yes busking - real street magic...
but street magic in it's new sense... is performing in the street for expressing your art, for entertaining others for free, for fun, or if opportunity comes for you too perform... just taking your magic out of the stage... but if you want to earn money then you should follow joejoe's advice as I said you can mix both... you can have a regular job as a magician in a restaurant for let's say from monday to friday. and when saturday come you may want to do street magic to test you're new learned tricks or lines or story or anything... half doing fun and half rehearsing for your show this coming week again.. not bad at all |

'Lo Ulyssees,
Well.....in all my extensive travels & experiences I've yet to see a busker work from his/her pockets, BUT, I guess there's no reason it COULD'NT be done, so I'll take you at your word, and add the word 'usually' to my above post. To Discjocky, You are correct my freind.....the only people who could cut me off from a post are the moderators, and I'm SURE that they would NEVER dare to cut m-
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Whoops, finger must have slipped. You were saying??
I was about to mention Cellini, but it looks like Ulysses has done a better job of it than I could.
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

All the marketing, video clips, and a lot of posts on the Café, etc. speak to "Learn this in hours" "Do the pass in hours" "Just walk right out and do this now. Get the chicks" "Now, now, now, now !!!!!" "Zero to 60 in one hour practice" "If you flub up a trick. Laugh it off and do another one" "Test out new learned tricks" This is completely irresponsible. It teaches the newbie that it just takes very little time to master magic effects. In reality, it takes quite a while for even the simplest effect. To pull it off properly. And most of it has nothing to do with the trick. It has to do with timing, coreography, body language, talking, pausing, looking, leaning, waiting. When to talk. When NOT to talk. You will learn these things from reading books. Not from street magic DVDs. The newbie is learning at some of these street magic forums/sites that the trick is in the gaff or the on-line demo or the DVD. Whatch it and you'll be ready to go!!! A painter does not go to one painting lesson on Friday nite, and then set up an easle on the street corner, with a tip jar on Saturday morning. It is very natural to want to perform something right away. You just can't help yourslef sometimes. And when that happens, it brings down the artform. And that is why when the announcement of ... "Magic Show in 5 mintes" is heard, all the grownups go looking for their kids, so they can (while the kids watch the show) go lean up against a fence somewhere smoking cigarettes. The parents aren't stupid. They know.... Magic shows are BAD becuase the magicians don't practice enough. Please DO street magic. But please give each and every effect the time it deserves to ripen in your heart, your hands and in your head. Do you part to bring the parents back to the magic show. Please don't just "do" tricks. Maybe I'm wrong. If so great.

I worked out of my pockets before, as I didn't have a choice - my permit did not allow me to sit anything down on the boardwalk at all.

There she was, a dodgy old prune in a tiara, rushing at me waving a sword. Do all knights suffer this whilst being made?

Sorry frank...
I didn't elaborate... I mean, new learned tricks is routines or effect that you have "practiced well" (almost perfect) and it's time now to show it to others... and not necessarily new tricks that you've learned for hours... I also shared the same sympathy "This is completely irresponsible. It teaches the newbie that it just takes very little time to master magic effects .... " what I'm trying to said about my post above is he can perform street magic as a rehearsal for his upcoming restaurant work... |

I suggest going to Penguinmagic.com and getting Sankey's stuff. I haven't seen any preformer do his stuff. (Exept Copperfield) When making money, do stuff like Floating bill where sometimes you try to give the borrowed money back to them but they say, "You Keep It!"
