I would like to know from any of you that own Heirloom exactly what technique you used for "aging" the letter and photos. They are beautiful, but for the effect to believable, they should, ideally, look aged. How did you accomplish it?
Thanks, Doug

My photo's aged after a few months as I carried them in my wallet everywhere. The letter, I crumpled it up,then re-folded it and put it back in the wallet as well...hope this helps.

I think what I'll do is to get a photo copy before I go and wreck the thing, JUST IN CASE!!

I can't find the appropriate thread, but this has been mentioned before in the recent past. I believe the idea of tea staining and putting it in the oven was one method. However, Google to the rescue. Try this link

Hi All!!
As my photos were to big for my wallet, I scanned them all into my computer to resize them for a perfect fit. It was possible to play around with my photo editing suite lightening them and adding scratches etc This was very easy to do and the results were great. Cheers!!

Don't forget to 'blot' the letter with used (cold !) tea bags or mash some coffee granules into it. The oven is a good thing but keep a close eye on it. Rip some edges, screw it up, unfold it, repeat a few times and it'll look great. Just your acting skills as you tell the story to work on

Alternatively leave them in the attic for approx 50 years. That will do the trick. No pun intended

I believe the hardest part of this effect is not in the physical actions required to pull it off. There realy are none to speak of. The most challenging part is to take the written story/patter included and to commit it to memory, but to be able to repeat it during performance in such a way that it sounds like your own natural speech.
My conviction is that if you say the patter EXACTLY as written, it will no doubt come off sounding "wooden" and memorized. It won't sound natural. It absolutely MUST sound FRESH as if you are making up the words as you go along. In other words, it should have a spontaneous feel. You know, the way any body would tell a story if they did not have the story pre-memorized. After all, Kenton does not talk the way YOU talk. You must sound like YOU and not a copy of someone else. That, in my opinion, is indispensable, and the REAL challenge in this effect. What do you think?

Daffydoug is spot on. As long as you have the specific key elements in the story, make your own version. I've added a few touches to my story that means if I have to use the letter I have a very natural link from my story that makes it appear that Charlie's failure was predestined. I love this effect, it is very strong when correctly presented

The great part about this effect is that is does not LOOK like a magic trick. I'm saying that when a person pulls out a deck of cards and goes into his spiel, spectators automatically know (in most cases) that they are witnessing a trick.
But with Heirloom, you lead gradually into the story, and if you make the story believable by making it sound natural and unrehearsed, (as I mentioned earlier), the spectator is DRAWN in to the scenario before they realize what is going on. They don't REALLY have any inkling that this story is going to end in a moment of impossible astonishment for them. It comes as a sudden shock! Then when you pull out the photo, providing you have properly "aged" it, it looks so real and authentic, and it looks NOTHING like a magic prop of any kind, that the whole thing just suddenly becomes totally BELIEVABLE as if they just had a very weird experience indeed. They, in their minds, did not witness a standard "magic trick", but they had an unexplainable experience in which they participated and became personally involved in. It leaves them in the "Twilight Zone" wondering what just happened! Perhaps some spectators, after some time elapses in thought will begin to wonder if it was a trick, but the majority of them will be so totally blown away by the experience, that they will never get the impossibility of this event out of their minds! This will stick with them after most card tricks will hace long faded. Once again, if properly presented, it does not smack of a "magic trick", and should not be presented as such. You might throw in a couple subtle verbal hints in your story in reference to reincarnation and all that, planting the seed in their mind that perhaps THEY were uncle Charlie in another life? This is high level serious stuff that many folks nowadays will buy hook line and sinker. This effect is not to be played lightly, and has the potential of altering peoples perceptions to a high degree. Top notch stuff, man.
