I have seen several doorframe type devices that a magician appears from.
These usually include some type of flash pot. I would like to build my own does anyone know any good sources for plans for such an illusion Any help or advice as to how I can accomplish this effect inexpensively would be greatly appreciated... Steven |

The illusion you're refering to is the Flash Appearance. There are several methods, and no, that's not all. Check out Osbornes illusion books or the Aug 2004 Genii.

I just thought I'd pop my head in on this one and mention that if you are looking for something a little different that does not use B.A. there is a version on my website. It is called Dream Portal. She website will tell you all about it. If you have any questions reguarding it, feel free to email me anytime.

Mark Wilson's Complete Course In Magic has a section on just such an appearance.

I believe Andrew Mayne has an inexpensive easy to build flash appearence at his website weirdthings.com - I don't know the workings on it, but if it comes from Andrew Mayne, I give it a thumbs up already.

And then there's always the PVC Pipe & Dollar Store version if you just want to make one up quickly and cheaply. Actually several of Jim Gerrish's ideas are excellent for an opening appearance: Utility Cabinet, Garden Gate Illusion, Appearing Archway, PVC Flash Pot... all contained in Book 1 of his series.

The Genii article is very good and doesn't really require a flash pot.
I have the plans for several flash appearances and yes, they are Paul Osborne plans as well as Thayer's

Wow guys thanks for all your help...
Funny I have the Mark Wilson book and I don't recall that, I'll look again. Funny how many times I've gone back to that book, its a great one... The cheap dollar store version sounds like the best idea to me since I'm poor. 50$ for all those plans sounds reasonable, still I'll check the wilson book before spending any money. Hard to explain but I came up with my own version, using two flash pots wired together, and a black blind/curtain which rolls up in an instant to the top of the frame... I hit the flash, release the curtain, step forward in one fluid motion and presto I'm there. Perhaps since I built and came up with this myself I am nervous about it without reason. I video taped it, looks nice but I was thinking I could do something better or more impressive... I will look into all the options you offered... Steven Hey Dennis, Your right in Atco NJ? I'm in philadelphia, we should get together... I will pm you some details... Steven |

The version in the Mark Wilson book doesn't use flash pots (though it could). If I remember correctly, it is an appreance in a door frame. Very easy to put together and perform.
Thanks, Richard |

Have faith in yourself, young man. Remember the story of the bluebird of happiness. Try that illusion of yours out in front of an audience before you spend another nickle. And this is from a guy who runs a virtual magic shop!

We built the Stage Door appearance in Wilson's book, and it worked out pretty well for us. It's a great way to make a corporate client appear, too. It was relatively inexpensive too, as I recall.
If you can't find it in your book, I will scan and send the details to ya. Just PM me - I'm happy to help. Best of luck, by the way!

I too built the door illusion and it worked GREAT! It was decorated as a dressing room door and was used to open the show. The show openend with the assisstants searching for me as the "Show was about to start". They checked the dressing room and found nothing. "Maybe we should have knocked." Of course they do, the music strikes up and there I am.
It worked very well and we built it in about 10 minutes from an existing door frame already in the theatre. I certainly ssecond Misty's recommendation. -Chris

Great ideas bouncing around in here! Just an FYI here...the Wilson Door Frame is easy and inexpensive, I have used it too. One note here depending on where you intend to do this; the door frame does have some angle issues. Not too bad but some. The portal type appearances (depending on the model) may not have any angle issues. Consider you venue before you choose a method. Go get 'em!

A twist of the door knob I'll throw this idea out as fodder for you great minds. The door is closed when it is first presented. the door is opened and an assitant walks through to show it empty. the door is closed. once again it is opened and the magi is standing there. he steps down and closes the door there is an assitant standing behind the opened door who then steps down and opens the door to reveal a third assistant.

Instead of producing the third assistant, produce a kid from the audience and announce... "This is Timmy. He got lost and is looking for his mother." THEN produce the third assistant (who brought little Timmy with him and told him where to stand ... all prearranged with the kid and his mother of course, but the audience doesn't need to know that!).
