Hey guys, I needed a little opinion on something.
I've have gotten a lot of really, really, strong reactions from Mr. Sankey's "Back In Time" effect. Recently I've added an extra patter line to the effect, and, in my opinion, it makes the climax a little stronger. Towards the end of the effect right after I secretly fix the slop shuffle and I ask the spectator if the "x card", lets say the 5 of diamonds, is their card...they, of course, say, “No” due to the fact that their chosen card, lets say, was the king of hearts. I ask them to wave the 5 of diamonds over the deck while saying the phrase "5 of diamonds take me back in time." By saying those word this reassures them the they are actually holding the 5 of diamonds when in actuality they are holding their selected card, and when they turn it over they seem to react a lot stronger. What are your opinions to this patter line that acts as a psychological reinforcement that the card n there hand is not the selected card? Would you use it in your routine? And why not try it on someone today and reply with some feedback. =o)

I've heard good things about Back in Time. Which of Sankey's many videos is this found on?

It's also in his book UNLEASHED, however I do not find the patter you mention to 'strengthen' the effect. I do however see that it adds more spectator involvement and entertainment, thus making it a more 'memorable' effect.

"Back in Time" is pure Sankey genius. Use whatever patter you like, fellas, because no matter what you say, after that slop shuffle straightens out and you've got them holding their selection, the audience will be speechless anyways.

While do the slop shuffle, change up everytime the cards change color and you will have seperated the reds and blacks. Now you are set up for OOTW.

I like your idea. This is one of my favorite effects. I'm going to give your suggestion a try. Thanks for sharing.

Watching it on his "best of" dvd should give you a great idea of what NOT TO DO. He tromps all over his own magic moment with his "comedy lines" that to me.... the effect is completely lost. It's like he has to pee so bad, he just finishes the trick to get it over with. Slow down and sell the ending. That's why you're doing the trick in the first place. If you're not addicted to DVDs and want to save money, I might be able to get a cheap copy of a VHS, if you're interested. Frank

I just did this effect tonight! It kills. I agree with the comment that Sankey doesn't sell the effect well on VBOJS.
I like the "take me back in time" patter. Nice touch. Also makes the spec fee like they're activating the magic. Good way to bring them in.

Just a brief historical credit:
The idea of using the Slop Shuffle to setup for OOTW goes back at least to Martin Nash. I used to hate the slop shuffle, as I never thought it looked like the way someone would actually shuffle cards. Until one weekend at the magic shop watching laymen shuffle the stripper decks my pal was pitching, that is... About half of them shuffled like they were doing a slop shuffle (without reversing the packets of course). Since then I've been convinced. |

Thanks for the history. The slop shuffle set up is brillant. Especially in Back in Time because there is a time delay and the deck correcting itself is secondary to the card revelation. Yes, sometimes spectators do shuffle that way. Lol.

In fact, I believe if you start with the deck in its original order you can end up with cards in perfect sequence.
Remove deck, let the spectator riffle shuffle it once then do slop. I might be wrong |

In Greg Wilson's Flashback, a more elaborate time travel routine, he does a slop shuffle in the middle, and the deck stays in perfect order for the final kicker where the cards go back to new deck order. The slop shuffle he uses is also interesting because only two cards are reversed while doing the shuffle.

Actually you should see David Williamson's version of Triumph on his Magic Farm DVD.
If you like back in time, you will absolutely love this effect. The presentation is far better, as wonderful patter is included. He has a brilliant idea for showing the cards all mixed up. FRank

Frank,
Is this the move where you cut deck into six piles showing top cards are varied, some face-up and other face-down? |

By saying "five of diamonds take me back in time", you're basically running when you're not being chased. It also seems like saying "I have here a normal deck..."
They just SAW the 5 of diamonds and you put it in their hand. You don't have to remind them what they're holding. |

I'd use a little trick that Whit Haydn talks about in his Chicago Surprise manuscript, where you call the card face down. If you hand them the card then ask, is the Five your card? By saying no when they hold the card it really reinforces the idea that it is not their card...because they just verbally agreed to it.
I'd check out Whit's manuscript if you want more detail. I just got it last week, and I think I've restructured every trick I do after reading it twice. Adam |
