Can anyone tell me a nice method to cut the shape of an animal from the middle of a silk and keeping it straight and from unraveling where the cut out is?

That's a new one. I've never thought of doing anything like that, so I'm not quite sure. So, you want to cut an animal shape out of a silk? Well, first you'll need a pattern or stencil, which I'm sure you've probably got or thought about. And I guess, there's really nothing you can do to keep it from unraveling short of sewing a back piece on or taping it somehow, which you don't want to do, cause that would take away from it being a silk, plus it wouldn't be a silk then.
The only thing I can think of, is to call someone like this company: http://www.pasilks.com/ And see if they carry such items as animal shaped silks. It may be a lot easier than trying to cut it out and get it just right. Good luck! |

I can do this but so can you (maybe).
Trace the outline you want to cut with a substance called Fray Check. You get it at fabric stores. It will make the fabric stiffer but there is no other way to cut with the silk fraying. I don't think hemming that edge is possible. Now take a very sharp exacto knife or razor blade and cut out the shape. If you split the area you have outlined, it will leave part of the fray check on the remaining silk. Keep that area to a minimum and that should minimize the added stiffness in the silk. I have hemmed holes for the knots off silk. But that was a little easier than an irregular outline. Richard

Thanks guys, I will probably experiment some to see how I want it to look etc. I will probably end up having Richard make the silks for me once I get them figured out. What about using clear nail polish on the edge after or before I cut out the shape? Any thoughts on that? Thanks guys.
Take care, Tim |
