I have seen Troy perform it in person, it looks very good. I perform it, reactions are very good.
Bob Kohler is going to be releasing a DVD of Troy's specific to Charming Chinese Challenge along with some fineses and handlings that are not in the book. One really nice finese is from Thomas Wayne who posts here often. Thomas showed me his thoughts on it around 3 am at LVMI Dan |

I hope Bob let's Shoot Ogawa put his version of this on his DVDs. Shoot does it with no extra coin and the first coin kills even those that know the routine. And I won't tell you the ending because you have to see it to believe it. Having said that, Troy's original routine is pretty good and will fool you. I think the Spellbound move in one of the phases is pretty cool.

I have seen Shoot's routine, I asked him specifically to see it when I saw him at LVMI.
When he showed it to me, he was till hammering out some of the handling (he told me so before he performed it). He does have some really neat ideas, and yes the ending is cool. Who knows, maybe it will show up on DVD since Bob is shooting (no pun intened) some of Shoot's magic for his own DVD. |

I'm lost as to what the effect is. Can someone elaborate?

Three Chinese coins are strung on a ribbon and you magically remove them one at a time.

Late on the night of the 16th, Bob Kohler, Apollo Robbins, Shoot Ogawa and I sat in a restaurant in Ceasars Palace and played with many different handlings of the only-three-coin version. Toward the end of that session, Apollo arrived at a VERY interesting idea (with Shoot's input), that WOULD involve a fourth coin, wherein a loose coin is openly dropped onto the ribbon - with another coin already strung on - whereupon it VISIBLY links onto the ribbon. I suggested first tying the ends of the ribbon together (since you can) and Apollo performed it several times that way with very good success. This may be the killer "ending" you are alluding to, but since Shoot Ogawa got on a plane the next day at 4pm I would be quite surprised if what you saw is truly the final version. Two things ARE certain, 1) the final version will be serious eye candy, and 2) the final version will be seriously tough action. One more thing; the first magician-killer phase can easily be done while adhering to the four coin formula and is easy enough for "Charming Chinese Challenge" workers to incorporate into their routines, even if they forgo the balance of Shoot's handling. That may very well be MY future approach. Regards, Thomas Wayne

Great routine.
I've been working on it for a few weeks now.The Spellbound sequence is very good. I also use the Jay Sankey's "Leaving Home" phase.Looks like real magic. I have problems with the ending. I vanish the last coin with the Clifton's move, and I use a purse instead of the spectator's hand for the reapparition of the coin, but I'm still not satisfied with it. Marc |

I perform my own version of "Charming Chinese Challenge." It's a great effect and draws powerful responses.
By the way, I'm dying to see Shoot perform. |

Thomas, Shoot has an ending that involves a large Chines coin appearing on the ribbon. It's a shocker because you don't see it coming. He probably didn't perform it because he forgot to bring the large coin.
See ya! Greg

After this coin vanishes from the ribbon you show that the coin is not on the ribbon and it's not in your hands, so... and you direct your gaze downward. It requires balls you could bowl with, but properly directed it will make them scream. Credit for this ending goes to the man himself, Troy Hooser. Regards, Thomas Wayne

I like Troy's version and people always get blown away. Just as Troy suggested, "A Touch of Brass" is an excellent prequeal to the Charming Chinese Challenge.
I've seen Shoot perform (I was his "spectator") with three coins and it was pretty good. |

I saw Joshua Jay perform this over the last weekend at the Tannen Jubilee. He was selling the thin Chinese coins needed for this routine. This is something not really alluded to in the write ups, the fact that the coins should be somewhat thinner than the usual Chinese coins sold by magic dealers..
If you read the first paragraph in the DesTROYer book or in Vol. 1 SILVER SURF, Joshua writes, "The most difficult part of this trick is probably obtaining the four Chinese coins and ribbon." I was a bit surprised that the Charming Chinese Challenge did not appear on any of the three Hooser Total Destruction DVDs. Now I see why, as this will be put out as a separate DVD. |

I bought a set of "Chinese Old Coins (according to its label)" from a Chinese store sometime last year for $5 and 10 different markings (good luck charms). I was intending to use it for a routine (It's still inside the plastic case) but decided to use the Johnson Chinese coins as they're larger and stand out in a medium-sized crowd

I have never seen the effect performed. Perhaps it is not that popular over here in Germany. Could you suggest good books or videos that teach the effect? Not just a beginners version, I like to get as much material on an effect as possible. Thank you!
