I figured out most of it, its just the way he makes it look like hes putting the card down, its awseome!

That was not the best performace of Open Travellers.

You can find it in the Alton Sharpe book or MANY variations in print.

If you want, check out Denis Behr's site for some elegant card work.

I think Bill Malone did this on one of his On the Loose DVD's as well. Nice execution though.

Ed Marlo and Larry Jennings might disagree.

Perhaps that convoluted, jumpy and strange handling was Paul's. His routines were more direct as I recall. Super Magic came out a long time ago. The illustration for Invisible Palm Aces was cute.

Paul gives credit to Larry and Marlo in AOA, but the handling shown in the video resembles Paul's handling.

I learned that from Chris Kenner's "Totally Out of Control". However, there were some great little sublties in that performance that were not taught.

As I recall the trick in Kenner's book was more direct and used a clever bit of "helping" technology. Smile

BTW, my comment on that video came from watching it with the sound OFF.

I was looking at congruence and purpose in actions. What I saw was much rushed and unmotivated handling. Perhaps the performer has a good script to motivate all that handling.

What struck me the most about the entire routine was the conveluted replacement for a palm after the first card "travelled".

It was like he didn't want to switch the leader packet or palm, so he came up with some kind of mutation of a vernon....
actually, I don't know what the heck that was.

the other issue, and ive discussed this on another forum, is the final ace.

not a bad try though, and the patter was sub par.
you missed nothing with your sound off.

Bill Miesel >> Marlo, Cervon & Vernon >> and then, at last, Jennings.

Paul Harris' routine came later, apparently an attempt to do the effect with no palming. Unfortunately (and with all respect to Paul), the result is decidely inferior.

Still, you can hear positive reactions from the spectators in the video, which shows that even simply adequate (and cluttered) magic can be strong. I've no doubt the reactions would have been even stronger (by several magnitudes) if he'd performed a better handling -- and possessed a higher degree of expertise.

I believe the video was originally posted at the magic video depot, someone from seen it there and got it put on ebaums (or someone from ebaums seen it at the depot).
Thanks! Scott B.

I watched it with the sound off and then with the sound on. I agree with Jonathan, it was rushed on convuluted. In addition, when he was handling the cards, he handled them very loosely and naturally and also with a vice grip. Guess when he was doing something sneaky? It stood out like a sore thumb.

He would do good practicing it until the entire routine looked "natural", as The Professor often said. And Jon, you missed nothing with the sound turned down. It didn't add anything to the routine.

Actually this was originally uploaded to MVD and it was a live performance of open travellers which actually got a great response from the school auditorium he was performing it in. The handling of the packet changes wasn't as nice as others but the card appearance was clever. It was not Paul Harris handling. Paul does a 4 card only travellers like I do. And before Marlo and Jennings get all the credit lets not forget Bill Miesel's Invincible. 12 months before Marlo's Open Travellers appeared in the New Phoenix. Which by the way Bill gives credit to Marlo's Real Gone Aces as inspiration in his book The Creative Card Magic of William P. Miesel. And as far as I can see is about as close to the modern Open Travellers as any.

I can't see the routine but I can hear it.

It sounds almost word for word like bill Malone's patter.

Great, another person decides to copy an inferior version of the trick. Why? Something too difficult involved in reading the trick in the Sharpe book?

I put a handling of the trick on a related thread. Probably well worth the effort to find it and also to learn the Stuart Gordon move.

OK, that is Bill Malone's handling and patter (word for word) with the exception of the last ace. Malone displays the 3 aces on the table cleanly, really places the last ace on the deck, and then concludes with the four aces on the table. This guy eliminated the palm of the last ace.

It certainly is NOT Paul Harris' handling.

Your ARSENAL? Is your magic a weapon? Do you fight people with it? The words you use tell a lot about your thinking.
