My favorite Barry Mitchell item is his (along with Tim Sonefelt) Creativity at Sea Cruise. It's not a prop or effect...it's WAY BETTER (and not much more expensive than a really good effect). At his cruise/conference/convention/experience (whatever you wanna call it) I learned how to create KILLER effects of MY OWN with the props I already have. Sure all of Barry's stuff (and Tim's for that matter too) is/are GREAT, but when you learn how to create an effect that suits YOUR personality, YOUR show and YOUR objectives, that's WAY BETTER than simply using someone elses' bit (IMHO).
MagicAL PS: No promotional fees or considerations were paid for this glowing endorsement, although I'm not adverse to receiving compensation for my time and efforts. Barry & Tim: Have your people call my person..... |

I honored Barry with a poem at last years FCM Conference....He loved it and you may as well.
------------------------------------------------------- Barry Mitchel there he stands; part genius part man. From his head ideas number a thousand and one; yet from that same dome hair he dawns none. In a room filled with gadgets, trinkets, and buttons galore; out he steps victorious with a new trick we all adore. But what to price it...hmmm best go high; for he has to get silks from Tim...and he knows we'll buy. Barry Mitchell how humble is he; his only recognition is this self written poem in which he asked me to read! ------------------------------------------------------- 2009-Daniel Lusk |

It was part of our Late Show MC bits. I wrote 3 poems that year. Barry Mitchell, David Ginn, and Justin Flom. I do not think David ever got to hear his.

I have to add Super Sleuth to the list . . . While it was also the idea of Bev Bergeron, it is a great card revelation in which the kid assistant can guess the three cards selected by audience members. The patter, costume and audio tape are funny, but this one has a clever means of guessing the cards and is one of those tricks I am always looking for - one where the birthday kid does all the magic. Excellent concept.

I vote for the Mother of All Diamonds. The mechanics are very simple, but with the right presentation it packs a powerful punch. I love it. I also like his books on creativity and storytelling.

Would someone please give this 6 year old lame thread a break? Barry Mitchell makes, and sells ordinary magic with a lot of hype.

While this thread and others may be 6 years old, many folks on the Café may not have been around that long, making the thread new and interesting to them.
Furthermore, a prop that is ordinary to one person may be extraordinary to another. As for the hype, please show me any magic designer that does not hype their products (even very bad ones). Personally, Matthew and I use several Barry Mitchell props along side of Joe Eddie Fairchild, Chance Wolf, Axtell, Steve Spill, Scott Alexander, Bob Kohler and many other designers props and all of them work extremely well for us. Barry's props may not be the lastest and greatest "new" items on the market, but many of them are extremely well thought out and cleverly designed. Barry is a very creative thinker, and his props also work well as springboards for further development by other creative thinkers like my son and I. If the thread seems too old or too lame to someone, then they certainly have the opportunity to skip past it and not read it. |

I have many of Barry's products, and as far as quality and customer service is concerned, he is way above many others that I have dealt with. It is not necessarily the prop but what also goes into it.
If you are an adult entertainer, his products may not be for you, but you can learn a lot about creativity. Now in answer to this question, there are so many of his items I use in my shows, but I have tried to think of the one item I have used more than any others and it is probably the Mother of All Diamonds. Use this in Gospel Shows, Birthday Shows, School Character Shows and much, much more. It has been a real winner for me, but I use my own story not the one supplied by Barry.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.
