I'd really like to know how on earth he found out what was written on those cards. He went over and appeared to touch the woman's hand but didn't appear to touch the card.
All the techniques I know involve CTs or taking the card etc. Anyone with any references or pointers? |

No...I have seen Derren do most of these effects live in his tour last year. Almost all his selections were made by throwing frisbees.
Therefore any pre-show work would be difficult |

For the record, in his current tour he uses no pre-show at all

I was quiet disappointed. for a stage show it was great, for a tv show is was a bit boring. you can see he's been taking acting lessons.

Scarbo.... bingo.
I've heard it said by a couple of people who attended, that all is not precisely as it may appear. The peek was apparently incredibly brazen - enough so that probably wouldn't have withstood scrutiny by a lay tv audience, let alone magicians. Seek and ye shall find. |

The most noticable thing I noticed was that in the past year his patter has not changed a single bit (even the 'mistake' where he calls the second woman the first womans name). Now, I'm not saying he should change his patter every show, but after doing such a large tour and his TV series and appearances surely it would only be natural for his patter to "evolve". Like an actor in a play whose character develops between the first and last performance. I just exspected someone as smart as Mr. Brown to come up with some new lines.

Yes, I know what you mean. In general, in fact, I sometimes get the impression from Brown that he is constantly making decisions about what to do based solely on whether it reflects his current public image. I know we all do that to some extent, but the danger is a downward spiral into a flatter and flatter character until nothing you do will surprise anyone. They'll consider you a curiousity, but you'll lose the edge. When I was being trained as a teacher the best teachers all had a suggestion that applies well to any time you readdress the same audience: once in a while, do something totally different. It causes people to sit up and take notice. Depending on our performance venues and schedules, some of us may not have to deal with many repeat audiences, but when your audience is as big as a country or the world, things are a little different.

One thing...
What did the peek (if it was) look like in his LAST years live show? Anyone who was there please tell us if it took longer than on tv or was suspicious or anything like that. thx

He didn't do a billet peek, he used a Psychic Clipboard.

From what I remember, especially for his final encore trick, He used a Psychic Clipboard but at no point did I see him actually handle the clipboard.
Also, from what I remember, many of his tricks didn't involve the audience member actually writting anything down, simply thinking it. |

One thing I could discover was the effect with the A-Z map. Beautiful if you watch close enough and think a bit, you'll get how it's done.
***... these guys got money. Will take a long time til I can afford a psychic clipboard

The A-Z thing must be a force given the amount of Shepherds Bush related stuff that turns up at the end.

I can't believe you guys call yourselves mentalists and can't figure out simple effects like those used in the gathering.
Remember there are only so many ways to mind read and any well read mentalist will know enough methods to cover everything performed in the gathering. There for clever editing had to be used, and if you know what a cut looks like then it's very easy to see just wthis happened. Anyway, the above is not directed at all just those asking silly questions. Curt

People often say this but more often than not do not know how to do all the effects but merely think they do. He's fooled pros with Lift etc.

I realise that "Derren posts" on here are not only numerous but also tend to invoke heated debate and strongly divided opinion from a wide spectrum of people - from professional magicians/mentalists to those involved in areas such as psychology, nlp and allied studies. It is a worthy achievement that Derren has not only contributed to raising the public profile of mentalism in the UK in this way but also the fact that he attracts unrivalled scrutiny as a performer from all these fields.
The intense debate surounding his work is still as strong today as it was when he first appeared in the public eye around 5/6 years ago. What I feel Derren has done is presented a unique mix of what he regularly describes as "magic, psychology, illusion and showmnship" but has done it in a manner that members of forums such as this are motivated to comment. The continuing constructive debate or argument (call it what you will) surrounding the "Derren Phenomenon" is only positive in my opinion. It is based around the career of someone who still manages to challenge opinion, develop the art of mentalism, and most of all intrigue even the most knowledgeable of magicians and mentalists. It is fascinating to read through a Derren topic on here because you will find a myriad of opinions, hatred, speculation about methods, idol worship etc. Contrary to popular opinion, not all of these opinions originate from the "muggles" but from the professionals supposedly in the know. Some of these professionals may be begrudging re. Derren's contribution and may refuse to acknowledge he is groundbreaking but they will struggle to explain the exact nature some of Mr. Brown's tricks just like the rest. In all professions it is not wise to become complacent or precious about our practice. Judging from the number, extent and emotive nature of Derren posts then it is clear that like 'em or loathe 'em, they are allowing all comers to contribute to a lively debate about the art and true nature of mentalism. That can only be of benefit to all. Terry |
