I don't own stock in the Café, I'm not dining with Reed on a nightly basis, Curtis and I chat sometimes, so any review I give of any prelease that was a kind gift and offered for opinion on content and actual studio situations, angles etc. Are my unrewarded factual opinions, nothing more.
I don't feel this is gossip, but opinions of those who were fortunate to be considered for a sneak peak of the final product as mentioned earlier in this thread. As mentioned earlier in this thread I too am guilty of staying away from the classic palm and some other sleights. Reed's approach is well thought out, makes sense and get this - If you practice you can actually do the sleights that Reed teaches! As to the quality of the DVD and the shoot. The focus is on the project at hand, not elaborate back drops, large chested assistants or flashy props. It's a well organized, thought out project that is shot professinally by Steve and the crew and one thing that I paid very very close attention to was the "Sound" quality. All dialog is very clear and sharp and sounds very clear in Mono, DTS Stereo, Dolby 5.1 and Dolby 6.x In my opinion ( and it's an opinion only ) this is a must have dvd for beginners and pro's alike who "WANT" to learn. If you're looking to learn how effects are done or a mini magic show, this dvd is NOT for you. If you are willing to follow Reed's instructions and dedicate yourself to perfecting the moves, well - you'll find this material just what you need. Gossip...pfffft. Jake

I personally can't wait for this to come out. I have been in magic about 30 years, and I know there are people that the CP comes to them more easily than others. I have never had a good CP, even after working on it for months on end with halves, dollars, quarters, palming coins, etc. There may be something to do with the shape or size of certain individuals' hands, but even though I feel and can see muscle development, I cannot do a decent CP to save my life, I either need to use too much pressure and cause them to slip out, or they fall out with too little.
I agree with Brad, it isn't easy for some of us to learn, even with the proper instruction. David Roth had even tried to help me find the right position after one of his lectures, and even with that help, I still struggle. If Reed's video can help me 'get it' then it would probably help anyone. If someone wants to send me a promo copy, I would be a great testimonial ;-) (I would even pay for a pre-release version) |

Thanks for asking Bill.
Actually, FedEx delivered the dvds a few days ago. I was happy to see them until I realized something was missing from inside the cases - the menu inserts! Aarg! We take great pride in going that extra mile to make our dvd packages not only attractive, but provide the most value for your money. While not required, we include a full color menu insert with every dvd we sell along with our signature Wooden Nickel. Since we spend extra moola for these items, I certainly expect to see them included. A quick call to the manufacturer confirmed that someone there dropped the ball and our inserts were sitting in a nice stack at the factory. That said, we are waiting for FedEx to pick up all the boxes and deliver them back to the factory. Once there, each box must have the shrinkwrap removed, the insert placed inside, re-shrinkwrapped and then shipped back to us. Estimated time: Approx 2 - 3 weeks, possibly sooner. So, until FedEx shows up, my living room is full of boxes, stacked up to the ceiling, which really makes for a unhappy wife. Once we have them back, I'll take them to our small warehouse to await delivery to would-be purchasers. There you have it - the rest of the story.

Geez. In the time this thread has spanned, I could have learned to classic palm with my feet.
All jokes aside, I am looking forward to seeing this project. Curtis and Kainoa have both mentioned it to me at one or another in the last year, so I guess some anticipation has built up. Being a person who has been using the classic palm for nearly 2 decades, I don't know how relevant it will be for myself and my work, but I am far more interested in seeing what kind of impact (if any) this has on the world of coin magic. I believe that the CP is one of those rights-of-passage moves. It is the gateway drug of coin magic. IF you don't "get" this one you never really move on to the advanced stuff, much less focus on coin magic in general (yes, this a broad generalization, and I know many greats never focused on the CP...Goshman and Ramsay to name a few). But Ask yourself, how many people do a flawless back-clip, edge grip, nowhere palm, or JW grip, who don't already do the CP? (BTW that was not an exhastive list of advance coin moves, so please no jumping on the "what about the mutobe palm?" kind of threading.) While I am sure that this DVD will only help the willing (those with the desire to be a better magi), I do sincerely hope that it brings some new faces and thinking to the world of coin magic. There are only a handful or coin men to the thousands of card guys out there. And while people like Reed, Curtis, Kainoa, and Jonathan (again just to name a few) have done wonderful things for raising the bar of coin magic. I will hope that many more will set the cards aside, pick up some coins and start adding some great work to the canon of magic.

I'm always looking forward to the Chef's new products!
By the by, Spackle666 taught me how to classic palm; he should probably do his own DVD. |

Hmmm, Well, I don't know if I would go quite that far...., but kainoa has always had a penchant for exageration, which of course is a asset to a conjuror.

Hey Steve
This sounds like a perfect Winter project for me. I might have missed it, but what will this DVD cost. Do magic Café staff members have to pay extra? Al Angello

Since I am one of the lucky ones to have previewed the Classic Palming DVD, I want to make comment for what you're about to see on this DVD.
First, the production quality is excellent. Top notch! The classic palm is a fundamental sleight for any magician and yet I am so surprised how many magicians do not use it. This DVD will empower you to learn and perform the CP. I think every magician should know how and use the CP, that's why they call it a classic. Once performed correctly, it works. Reed does a great job explaining the details. So if you are not performing the CP then buy this DVD and give yourself the freedom to enjoy this sleight as part of your craft. With a little bit of practice......You can do it! Steve Hart

The McClintock "Classic Palming with Coins" DVD is a pure delight in that it is both entertaining and educational. The interplay between Reed and Curtis Kam in the introduction is fun and enhanced by the use of special features. These "special features" continue in the introductions to each chapter. Reed gives a very complete coverage of the classic palm and his special techiques for learning how to do the palm.
I think it is particularly important to realize that Reed McClintock went from being totally unable to do a classic palm when he first began doing magic to becoming certainly one of the best if not the world master of the multiple classic palm with both hands. His learning methodology for the classic palm is innovative and Reed is proof of it's validity as a viable technique. In additional to a thorough coverage of the classic palm, Reed also covers the muscle pass (a special "tool" is included with the DVD to assist in learning the MP) and dealing with moist and dry hands in additional to the importance of other performing techniques such as misdirection and pacing. Finally, a bonus section includes a Miser's Dream routine, a guest performance by Steve Dobson, and a fun triva game. This DVD features the "before" Reed McClintock and not the current "after" version. However, having seen him do his stuff at the last FFFF, I can assure you that skinny people (at least the smaller Reed McClintock) can also do fantastic classic palming. Reed McClintock is not only an extremely talented and skillful magician, he is also a very sharing and friendly person. He sets the bar high, but is always willing to help others improve. Reed's virtues come across in this DVD. A well done DVD - Without question - if you want to learn the classic palm and prehaps more importantly - multiple coin palming with single coin releases - this is the DVD to purchase. Bill |

I think everything I was going to say has already been said...
- covers singles, multiples, and various sizes and denominations - touches on moist and dry hands - covers misdirection and pacing - teaches the muscle pass - has an interview with Kam on the genesis and progression of the technique - shows different "ideas" for effects - has a (very nice) effect and performance by Steve Dobson - has extras (including the free wooden nickel to practice) Yep, I think it's all there! As someone who can already palm singles and multiples, I can't give a review of the effectiveness of the technique. However, it's been taught with success at Reed's lectures. The DVD's called "Classic Palming with Coins". It's for those who would like to CP and don't know where to start (and believe me, Bobo's isn't much help), or have already concluded they "can't" CP coins. Yes, there's only a few "ideas" for effects, but the DVD is on the technique alone. So I view the "ideas" (which could be used as actual effects) as extras. The only negatives I can recall are that sometimes it seemed that Reed and Kam had to think about what to talk about next, but that doesn't hinder the learning in any way; and Reed's microphone wire was out during the interview, but I'm obsessive compulsive. Oh, and the technique uses several coins (less than ten) that you won't be able to use for anything other than practice. If this is a problem, I would suggest using appropriately-sized washers. All in all - If you want to learn to CP coins correctly, or have already said "I can't", this DVD is for you.

I've been doing a classic palm for about 40 years, which I learned from a book in my local library. I have developed and improved it over the years to be able to handle multiple coins, releasing them one at a time, and various other techniques. I thought I knew everthing about the classic palm, but Reed gave me yet more things to think about.
I really enjoyed the DVD, excellent production quality (great music too...hmmm, what was that song that keeps playing in my head?), and seeing Curtis as an interviewer was very entertaining. All in all a great DVD which will definitely help the neophyte and maybe give the "experts" something to think about too.

Well my copies came today. What a professional production. I have made the palming aid and step one of my coin magician training has begun. After this I guess I'll have to open up my Bobo book.

Are we spoiling the new magicians? Like Steven, many years ago (Over 40), I took Tarbell's Volume one and from pictures, learned the classic coin moves including the Classic Palm. What this DVD brought back was the days I would go to Junior High School with half dollars palmed in each hand, and all day during school I would do what I normally would do, not study and goof-off. I did this just to make all natural moves with the coins in each hand.
The "Classic Palming with Coins" would have made my job of learning so much easier, if we only had video or VHS or DVD back in the late 50's. I enjoyed watching the DVD, and have always done the stage version of Miser's Dream. Tarball taught me the moves, it was up to me to put them in some sequence so it would look like real magic during the production of coins. If only I had this DVD back then, learning would have progressed so much faster. I personally judge a DVD purchase if I get one useable routine or idea from that DVD. This I did, the close-up miser's dream was the biggy for me because I like the stage version, now I have a close up version. Add to this the other methods of using the classic palm that I never thought of. I instantly was able to perform them. To me, it is a worthy addition to my collection of DVDs. Dennis PS I'm not a close-up guy, except when it comes to coins because I always have a magic trick with me, when I have a coin in my hand. No gimmicks needed.
