I would like to purchase some rope magic, but..
Can this be learned from the books such as Abbotts Encyclopedia or Rope, or The Award Winning Rope Magic of Francis Tabary(the book)? Or am I better off getting a DVD: Fiber Optics Tabary Rope Magic or Daryl's 3 DVD Expert rope magic made easy(or is it Easy to master Rope magic?) looks like it covers a lot of information. Does it come in book form? I like being able to just open up a book, yet some things almost require a more visual presentation than one can get from a book. I've been reading other threads on this. People seem to currently like Fiber Optics, but I haven't seen much comparison to the other DVDs, and no one is talking about the two books I mentioned above. Would like your thoughts Thanks John Update: June 15 2005 Hmmm, since no one is biting, I'll answer myself.. I got Daryl's 3 DVD rope series. It looks good, but seems like vol 1 could have been put in a book(books are so nice, easy to pick up and browse, make comments in...). Initially I wanted the Kellar rope tie, and the spirit tie. They are in vol 2, and I'm ready to do a comedy bit with the Kellar rope tie at a family reunion. After seeing some demos of the Fiber Optics, I agree it looks great, but many parts seem to be standard moves, or not too hard to figure out(but I'm sure Sander's helps you with some smooth handling). I think I am getting much more material in Daryl's DVD, and should have a good routine after going thru vol 3. I am a happy camper! Question, maybe someone will answer this time. Does either Hull's 33 rope ties/chain releases or Abbott Encyclopedia of Rope magic offer enough extra to warrant buying? Please someone reply! Or I'll just have to find out for myself, the $$$ way! John

I have not yet used anything from Abbotts as an addition to either Tabary routines or Fiber Optics. F.O. is great, but (I think) needs a different presentation from Sanders' one - it is great when preceded by Tabary Knots Routine #1.
Abbots is a great "bathrooom reader", and has lots of great stuff, especially Cut and Restored, but I'd go 2nd-hand IMHO Good luck Rgds-Bruce |

Abbott's book is actually 3 volumes, and they are coming out with a reprint of the 3 in 1 single volume. I'm may buy it if its is reasonably priced.
Thanks John

Hmmm, don't know if anyone is listening, but...
I recently got Fulves' Self Working Rope Magic. It is a good(read cheap) way to get a good portion of what's in Daryl's. You won't get to *see* how to do the moves, but you can get a lot out of it. John

I have Richard Sander's Fiber Optics. I highly recommend it - super visual, eye-popping, multi-phase rope routine with over 22 killer moves to choose from. And never have to cut your rope again.

More thoughts - I did quite an extensive review of Fiber Optics over on Magic Bunny - see http://www.magicbunny.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15045&highlight=fiber.
I like it because once you have learned the moves it is completely flexible, and easy to move things around / adapt to your own story. As you say John, if you have seen Daryl, and then read Fulves, a lot seems "familiar" The version of Abbots that I have is, for my tastes, a little "dry". I appreciate that there is a wealth of material in it, however, there's too much of one thing, (e.g. cut and restored) for my liking. I dip into it now and again, but for me (as I said above), it has become a "bathroom book". I love rope magic, I hope you find it as much fun as I do - whatever your sources. Rgds - Bruce |

Thanks for that review, I clipped it for latter reading, maybe in my bathroom . I'm not surprised by your impression of Abbotts; I see it as a resource/reference, I may buy the vol 1-3 reprint if it comes out this summer for that reason. I see Fulves that way, there is not much routining in it. FO, by contrast, seems to provide a nice set of methods, that have been packaged into a nice routine. As far as cut and restored, I didn't see much value in 101 ways to cut and restore, but then I saw Whit Haydn's routine(thanks Al) http://whithaydn.com/video_clips.htm gave me some renewed interest in the benfits of the different methods, and the value in doing more than just the tricks themselves. Al: Looks like you got the answer to your FO video question. I don't know if that video shows the full breath of the routine. Fom what I see there, its nice, but I think I can do most of that with what I have. Besides, I need to think more about doing my own routining. John

Even though fiber optics has gotten rave reviews at this forum most of Richards Sanders moves are in the Daryls routine. Al

I have Daryls DVD and would recommand it. He does a good job describing each move. The DVD is also just fun to watch.

Hello All,
I am proud to announce the release (finally!) of the Encylopedia of Rope Tricks (formerly Abbott's Encyclopedia) in one hardbound volume. At 456 pages with over 1500 illustrations, this was a MONSTER project, but in the end, I'm very pleased with the results. The book contains some new material, all three volumes of the original Abbott books, and a new introduction by Mac King. I think this is an excellent resource for magicians of any skill level, from beginner to pro. The cost is $49.99, postpaid from the publisher. A Squash Publishing release, and one I'm very proud of! Best Regards, Gabe Fajuri Squash Publishing http://www.squashpublications.com |

Thanks Gabe,
I called Abbotts yesterday and confirmed that Squash Publications is selling the re-released version of the old Abbott's encyclopedia of rope. Volumes 1-3, plus extra. This is certainly a better price than I saw for individual volumes on ebay(not the Dover reprints). While I had them on the phone, I placed my order(sorry Gabe )
