I assume this is a book. It's found at Gwsmagic.com. I'd like to think that the one effect where the person is feeling a presence on their back is not the angels thing we all know...i.e. Fearson vanish...and also is the distant touch Banachek's psychokinetic touch? I'd like to think this guy is not ripping off other artists. Any ideas, guys?

Since the booklet doesn't get released until June 15th I doubt you can get any informed comment here. The first item with fingers on closed eyelids seems like an old one on one idea. It does seem like the Banachek idea is described, but no-one can be sure until the booklet is read. Too soon to start attacking anyone until the facts are available. I too, would like to think the best, rather than the worst.

No problem.
This is a collection of ideas, yes one is a very old one on one idea but many have not heard of it and it has a lot of potential in this area of magic. I always use it as an introduction into one of the other effects detailed. Gary |

I am quite happy that this is coming out and at the same time I am quite distrought. I have been using the "angel gag" (the thing where you touch their eyes) for quite some time now in conjuntion with loirs pk touches presentation. I found that the "angel gag" was highly overlooked as it is a very entertaining piece of comedy. However Id love to see what I can add to my act from this book that I will surely buy.
Find out what you cannot do.., Then go and do it!

Thanks for the reply Mark,
The 'angel geg' is a GREAT piece for this area of magic, it's sheer simplicity lets you concentrate on the performance side as opposed to technique. I hope you like Shivers! Gary |

Shivers - Some additions to Alakazam's descriptions to help you decide whether to purchase.
Effects: Susceptible - The spectators eyes are covered with your fingertips. Despite them being able to feel your fingers, they feel touches on the back of their neck and head. The other spectators will know how this is done. Relax - A spectator sits down and closes their eyes, you are watched by a group of other spectators. You stand well away from the spectator on the chair and you ask the spectator to remain quiet and in a moment you will ask them a very important question. You silently stroke your shoulder a few times. You then ask the spectator if they felt anything, the comments that they felt you stroke their shoulder, despite you being nowhere near them. A one person variant on PK Touches. Distant Touch - Standing well away from the spectator, you gesture towards them and they feel you touch them. How would you do this? That's how its done. Focus - One on One, the spectator feels something pushing them from behind, despite your hands being in full view. Substitute 'touching' for 'pushing' for a more accurate description and also note this cannot realistically be performed before other spectators - only one-on-one. Routines Connected - An ‘experiment’ in paranormal communication that takes an unplanned turn. A lighthearted attempt at making contact with the spirit goes off on a diagonal as things leave the performers control. This involves an untouched glass tipping over and/or shattering. The Crying Child - A disturbing performance, centered around the spirit of a young girl. This involves an untouched picture frame tipping over and/or shattering. Visual occurrences - not effects on their own, but ideas to weave into existing routines. Burn on - A dead match lights just by willing it to. An old one. Alakazam have added 'under impossible conditions' to their description of this effect. Substitute 'striking the match on the matchbox' for 'willing it to' and ask yourself - is this under impossible conditions?. Ghost Glass - A borrowed finger ring is placed inside a small glass as an impromptu spirit bell. At any time the ring is seen to move and shake inside. [i]This is achieved exactly how you think it is. Unaware - Events occurring that you are not aware of. The power of ignorance. A few observations but nothing profound. A really cannot recommend this book at £20. I realise Gary posts here but this is a very poor product, with sometimes vague and contradictory wording and 'routines' that are very scantily scripted, with no subtleties to enhance them. From Alakazam's descriptions I imagined these to be brand new methods but this is not the case, even for a relative beginner like me. To emphasize my point, if you wanted to make a wine glass move and topple over while no one was touching it, how would you do it? Well, that's how its done here. |

Thank you for the review and I'm sorry that you do not like it.
However, others will. Banachek himself asked if he could use Ghost Glass on a tv special. Regards Gary |

My Review!
Shivers - by Gary Sumpter £19.99 Alakazam USA and UK and GWSmagic.com They say “I'll let the contents do the talking... Introduction Who and where? Effects - Ideas and effects Making Contact - Harnessing the power of touch Susceptible - The spectators eyes are covered with your fingertips. At any time the ring is seen to move and shake inside. Unaware - Events occurring that you are not aware of. The power of ignorance. If you like this kind of magic, you WILL like Shivers! I say Hey hey!! It’s here. You know, as I read through this (and only a read for now) I wondered what it was I was expecting. I have come to realise… I had received it. Shivers is not a booklet of routines per say. What it offers is real world methods for creating PHYSICAL manifestations for mentalism and mental magic/bizarre effects. Shivers brings to the table methodology along with ideas for application within basic routines. Don’t get me wrong, the basic routines are nice…just not fully fleshed out. That’s fine, fleshed out routines is what we should be doing for ourselves. Some of the effects in Shivers are close to juvenile party tricks but the difference here (scoff if you can afford to...you've been warned) is that Gary Sumpter has revisited and shone a new light on them. Other effects (“The Crying Child”) are close to full blown seance set ups and the others sit happily in the range between. You will need "bits" for some of the effects in this book/let but most magicians/mentalists should already have them. If not, they aren’t dear. Many effects can be performed straight away. “Relax” for instance, is very similar to a well know mentalism effect and offers a great variation. This “other” effect alone is sold for half the price of this booklet! How’s that for a bargain! The booklet itself is GEORGOUS!!! The printing of it's generous 39 (!!) pages is like the very best of Alakazam's manuals and the illustrations are clear as a bell. Finally, Gary offers some sound advice regarding the potential impact these effects and convincers can have upon various people and with this, guidelines when considering the “deployment” of the books content. Overall: I like Shivers. It really has given me some ideas for using in effects and indeed ideas FOR effects and routines. Some people will shout “I’ve known about this effect...” or “That’s like such and such..” but don't they ALWAYS! I challenge people to tell me where anyone can go and buy these types of effects laid out so well…compiled and mixed and modified so well…thought about so well. Hmmm? Ya can’t can ya? Well…Gary Sumpter did it for you. I applaud his willingness to stick his head up out of the parapet, his ingenuity and his ambition! I’m stapling my copy of Shivers into Corindas 13 Steps! Rating: 8/10 Nice job!

Thanks Tom, can always rely on you for a well written and impartial review.
Will have to check it out. Simon PS Gary, I'd ordered it from you, but I got an email saying that my payment had not been received - did my cheque not arrive, or was there a problem with the card? (would be great if I could still get it for £15!! Simon |

Excellent review Tom.
I'm anxiously awaiting my copy. I'm sure there will be more quips about "hey, I already know this method!". Well, duh...that happens all the time. Of course I was familar with some of the techniques Gary has in his book, but that's not why I bought it. I purchased Gary's real world experience and time he has put into reshaping some known effects. I purchased Gary's visions that I myself would probably have never come up with. As an example, I've been doing metal bending for 8 years. I still purchase new bending effects that come out. 9 times out of ten I know the method, but what I'm after are other performers "take" on them. This is how I constantly improve my act. |

And THAT is why Shivers will be appreciated by some and not others.
Those that do NOT see the true value in Shivers are best not performing this type of magic anyway. Gary |

If people don't like your book, it's not a personal attack on you. I have two questions. Did you ask permission from Banachek to totally explain the methodology of PK touches? Did Lior Manor give you permission to explain his method of using thread? You said previously you were going to leave Lior's effect out. Wondering, James

Yes, I agree James, very bad taste. It is all pretty ridiculous: guy writes 'book'; guy hovers around the thread making sure to nip any criticism of 'book' in the bud, using awful Kenton Knepper Krap; book gets negative review; Alakazam start to worry about sales and .... Mr. Lauten (whose effects are sold through Alakazam and whose reviews of Alakazam's products are so consistently positive and uncritical that one can not take them seriously) weighs in with biased drivel.
It's this stuff that makes me shiver, not the derivative effects. Adios, Joey |
