You can buy a routine fairly inexpensively. Don Alan's (by Ron Bauer) is nice, as is Bill Palmer's (which I saw, but do not own.)

Buy a good routine. You might want to stay away from making your own props for effects you don't understand. Try out an inexpensive chop cup, maybe by Morrisey.

It's a phenomenon called "inertia"
Chop Cups are tricky to make right. Follow Chris' advice and buy an inexpensive cup. It'll save you a lot of grief in the long run. You really need to get a manuscript on this. Ron Bauer's Don Alan routine is the best place to start. http://www.rnt2.com http://www.morrisseymagic.com

I know how to use a truck, but I don't think I'm able to make one.

That's what we suggested to him. But before you can reverse engineer something you need to thoroughly understand how and why something works long before you attempt to build your own.

Let me give you the short version of my experience with chop cups -- and I knew how they worked. I decided I wanted to make a MINI chop cup in leather because I couldn't find one that I liked. I went through $300 of materials before I got it right. It took me six months of experimentation. Even with that I still donate one out of every four cups to SYM because they don't meet my commercial standards.
It's a lot of work and a lot of frustration. If you still want to do it, good luck. |

That is most everyone these days, Bill - for good reason! My son called me once from the road and described a broken condition to me. I replied, heck if I know, probably just need to press the reset. If that doesn't work, call AAA. He called me back a few minutes later asking where the reset was....he couldn't find it in the owner's manual! Just to stay on topic, buy a cheap cup, read the routines, then perhaps you'll come up with a nice idea for yourself. |

Blindbo is right. Buy a cheap cup, you can get plastic ones for less than $10 and aluminum ones for about $10. Buy Ron Bauer's "Don Allen Chop Cup". Do the routine, over and over and over. You will slowly begin to put your own character into it. As for making your own cup. I would strongly suggest looking for something else to make. There are lots of things that are easier.
On the other hand, this weekend I'm starting back making cups again. I have a few promised out then I'm making my full size combo cups. |

I use, and am extremely pleased with, Bill Palmer's leather cup from Adesso Verlag. The leather make-up of the cup allows for some wonderful flexibility with the final loads.
I am using some RNT2 glitter balls with it. Why? Even though the effect loses some of the old-world feel, the ball will disengage with just the slightest tap. You have to have a very light touch when you set the cup down, but it all works beautifully. Most people, however, prefer a stronger connection. Again, Bill Palmer's cup has my high recommendation. You can't go wrong with Bill's products, any of them. He is very aware that his reputation goes out with every shipment and his reputation has been painstakingly built over decades.
