I love the idea of making coins "grow" I just recently purchased "Dishonest Abe" but have been doing "growing coin" routines for a while now. What do you think is the most effective way of causing it to grow. Currently I've played around with the idea I saw on "Easy to Master Money Miracles" where he holds the coin in a french drop type position and wipes his other hand across and it grows (this was the first way I learned) Then a friend of mine taught me a way he uses where he holds the coin in left hand finger tips, and apparently just picks it up and throws it down into the hand again and it has grown. This one tends to look nice but be a bit more angle- sensitive. Then I've been working on a shuttle pass version lately which looks nice but sometimes I lack "motivation" for tossing it to my other hand. Are there other ways people make a coin "grow" ?

See David Roth Flurry routine. This is basically a shuttle pass to change the small coin into a big coin. The entire routine has served me well over the years.

Have a look at what folks are calling the "flying shutle pass". There are some variations in Apocalypse magazine and other places.
It all pretty much startd with Presto and David Roth in NYC.

Fertilizer, water, and steroids ! Seriously though...the best change I have seen to make a coin grow is by Allan Hayden. It was published in Apocalypse. Mike |

I just give them plenty of food and water. My coins grow up big and strong. But honestly, there are so many routines out there. I am very fond of Gary Kurtz's Flourious routine. It's a killer.

I think you are "tilting at windmills". Making a coin "grow"? Come on! Changing a coin from one size to another? Well, maaaaaybe... But really, if you want to change the size of a coin, and make it look magical, impossible, make it look like something you would do if you had the power? What would THAT look like? HOW would you take a penny and make it bigger? How would it LOOK to the people watching you?
Certainly NOT like a shuttle pass, or a French Drop, or a toss and cover type action. How about this? I might take a hold of the penny, with my thumb and forefinger of each hand on opposite sides, and pull it. Then turn it a bit and pull it some more. Then turn and pull, then turn and pull, and turnandpull, andturnandpull, andturnandpullandturnandpull!!! Faster and Faster, pulling and stretching, getting it to stretch out, bigger and bigger and bigger, until I was exhausted, worn out from exerting so much effort. Finally slowing down and carefully rounding the stretched out coin so that it looked just perfect. Now checking it carefully, waving it up and down in a cooling action, as if all the stretching had heated it up, made it soft, and the cooling was making it solid again. Ah, yes, that's it! Just about perfect. Looks pretty good, don't you think? Clunk! Go ahead, take a look... Best, PSC

Sounds good to me. Unfortunately, I don't know a method for creating this illusion. If you know one, fill me in on where I can find it. In the meantime, I simply want to know how to make a coin appear to grow with what I have (a small medium and large coin or in the case of my half-dollar, a normal size and jumbo size half)

I was offering a presentational possibility that creates the illusion of growth more convincingly than other things I've seen. Methodology is relatively unimportant, you can come up with a decent construct with existing slieghts, or minor alterations thereof.
If you have Bobo's "New Modern Coin Magic", the revised 1966 edition, then you might take a look at the Chinese Money trick, by Louis "Silent Mora" McCord. It is a reprint of a trick that originally appeared in the Sphinx magazine, then again in the Sphinx "Golden Jubilee", which is available free as a download on "The Learned Pig" website, if I recall correctly. Silent Mora's Chinese Coin Trick was recently, (within the last ten years, I believe), re-issued with directions and the coins by a magic dealer, though I can't recall who. The coins were reproductions, not bad, but not great. I had a set, and the man money coin broke when I dropped it, since the casting was pretty poor. I was given the set as a gift, as I've been known to do the trick occasionally. I actually spent considerable time in Chinatown, in San Francisco, searching for the real coins, and got a full set that matched in age and patina, so the "new" ones were a nice thought, and good as a back-up had I not broken the one "coin". If you decide you like the trick the coins are available thru coin dealers, though it may take a while to find them. They are not particularly expensive. In fact, I think the most I paid was for the "man" coin, and that was $9.00. All together I think the set cost me less than $20.00. Anyway, the trick involves changing a round chinese coin to an oblong one, (both with the traditional holes in the center and the chinese characters around the edges), then into "Man" money, another asian "coin" that is shaped roughly like a human figure, with trunk and legs. It is illustrated in MCM. The handling for that trick might give you some ideas for the "stretching" of a penny that you are interested in... Best, PSC

Gary Kurtz has a handling that is similiar to what Paul describes in his "Flurious" routine.

Shuttle pass isn't the right move to use here, it's just too obvious. It's designed and best used as a switch or holdout, not a change.
I just tenkai palm the jumbo, and then do a spellbound, alway's gets a great reaction. For methods read up on different spellbounds. Paul |

I have used the "Sucker" change from Derek Dingle's "Inflation" routine to change a half or a dollar to a 3 inch jumbo, with good results.
Simply alter the method so that it appears you are stretching the coin instead of "stealing" it. |

I've got a lot of milage out of the Sylvester Pitch. It's not a visual change from a small to a bigger coin, but It can make you produce coins of bigger nominations and sizes consistently. I normally goes from 25 øre (danish cents) to 50 øre, to 2 Kroner, to 5 kroner to a 20 kroner coin in Denmark, and at last I vanish the 20 kroner to my magical savings account - in thin air - where I can reach it whenever I want.
However, I love the visual chock from exchanging a regular coin to a Jumbo coin - it works all the time. Shuttle pass is an easy and instant method, But I do prefer a Spellbound even more. Gary Kurtz also have a very nice silk and jumbo coin routine. See The Sylvester Pitch VHS or Gregory Wilsons, Toll Free - on his "on the spot" DVD for another version. |

I'm not familiar with spellbound... if it's a move or a trick. I do own Bobo's Modern Coin Magic... it does seem that I've seen something in there about it. Could this be right? If so, I'll go look it up.
As far as the Sylvester Pitch, I do use that to produce jumbo coins and handfuls of change. I LOVE the sylvester pitch 98 video, but I need to be in a daring mood to do it. I think I have it down well enough now, but it still does not look as smooth as when Dan Sylvester does it. I've produced jumbo coins and my wife has been fooled by it even though she is familiar with the pitch (it still catches her by surprise) Hopefully soon, I'll get up enough courage to produce jumbo coins in the real world. The angles are sensitive and if you "miss" it will be painfully obvious. I'll keep practicing. Thanks Dann |

Thanks for the reminder about that trick in Bobo's. It's "spade" money by the way. The coins can still be had, even on ebaY if you look.
More important than the base mechanics is the framing and presentation. What is supposed to be happening? Does the coin grow of its own accord? What is the context and intent of this action? Remember, there is no competing with imagination.

Jonathan, I was a little confused by your post. Spellbound is a technique or effect in Bobos Coin Magic? I looked for it and could not find it. Maybe you (or someone) could give me a page #?
Vraagaard, as far as Sylvester Pitch, Dan Sylvester teaches this on his tape (how to produce jumbo coins, multiple coins, handfuls of coins along with eggplants, jars of sauce, loaves of bread, apples, shoes, you name it. It is INSANE!!! I would guess you are using the method taught by Gregory Wilson which is not bad, but I would recommend getting the Sylvester Pitch 98 video as it will help you make the pitch more believable, undetectable, and take it to the next level. Good luck with it. Dann |

Jon,
I have done this for kids many times. For some reason, asking a youngster if they want a bigger "money" always evokes a "Yes!". Taking a penny from them and stretching it to a Jumbo coin is incredibly effective. I've had teens come back to me with a coin I gave them when they were five or six! I have little kids bringing me thier friends and asking, "can you make Johnnies' money grow big too?" The wonder this evokes is gratifying. And to find it's remembered years later is really cool! I have had kids come back to me and ask me, tongue-in-cheek, "Can you shrink this so I can spend it? I've been saving it all these years in case I ran into you...." Best, PSC

I believe Curtis Kam had a partial clip of a growing effect In the foreclip of his POS video 2. He did it in the way that you are pointing to the small coin with the left hand, and grabed it by the left hand to "pull" and "stretch" the coin to a jumbo. The method is around the sleights of the fake take and optical illusion.
