Jeff posted this letter, seeking to sell his magic. I deleted the sales pitch, because that's not the point of looking out for our own (hopefully, Jeff will recover and not want/need to sell anything. Read on...

I can't list it all now. I have to have someone come over and type for me.

I have a lot of stuff and much of it is not opened. My plan was to start practicing in the next year or so as I have been out of practicing for a few years. I woke up 2 nights ago and my right arm was numb. I have no movement bekow the wrist. I thought I slept on it the wrong way. After getting out of the hospital I found that I have "nerve palsy". According to the doctor, it is permanant. I am going to see specialists, but they took an MRI, EKG, and Cat Scan, along with blood work, etc. I just want to be sure there is no way I can get better. I always hope for the best.

I am saying this because I can't use the closet full of effects with one hand....

It's really gonna hurt to get rid of my favorites. I have some great stuff I wanted to learn, but now I can't even dress myself....

I was looking to buy more magic until I woke up the other day and couldn't move my right arm. I'm really gonna miss magic. At least I can still read about it, but it won't be the same. There goes 30+ years down the drain.

p.s. Thanks Steve Brooks for giving me a fun place to go and learn about new effects. I intend to to continue reading the Magic Café for as long as health permits. Keep up the good work Steve.

Jeff

Jeff, you didn't ask to have this thread started, but please take advantage of this network of friends. We are keeping you in our hearts and prayers.

In that thread listed above he was going to sell all of his magic stuff. I hope he can see this thread and know that we are supporting him... and I for one hope he keeps it all. Don't give up your passion because of a medical condition. Look at Rene Levand. He is doing GREAT magic with one hand... I wish you all the best, my friend.

You're in my prayers Jeff. Keep your chin up. You have a lot of people pulling for you. I hope that everything works out, and I'm sure it will.

Jeff,
Mya and I will certainly keep you in our prayers and I would ask others of our Café community to drop Jeff a line or two via PM or email to give him some emotional support. Hang in there Jeff! Smile

I just found out about this thread. I decided yesterday that I am going to keep my magic collection and keep hoping for the best. I have 4 specialists to see in the next 2 weeks. I am hoping and I'm convinced that I will eventuzlly recover, even if it means being able to use my right hand to hold a deck of cards.

I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers. It has cheered me up knowing that so many people care. I'll be sure to let you know when I am back doing magic and playing the piano.

Thanks,

Jeff

I wish Jeff could meet a friend of mine John S. Payne. John was a rodeo cowboy and animal trainer. He is certainly not a guy short on talent. One day in 1973, at age 20, he touched a hot electrical circuit (7200 volts) and literally "killed" his right arm. Most people wouldn't have lived and if the had they would have stayed home at the ranch. Not John.

John developed a contract act for rodeos and fairs. In this act, John causes loose cattle to climb up onto the top of his gooseneck horse trailer. Then he joins them on horseback and stands up in the saddle. He didn't kill his arm; he kills audiences. Take a look.

Jeff isn't done. He simply has a marketing differential not available to all. Necessity is the mother of invention. Magicians are the best inventors of all!

I hope Jeff catches his breath and goes for it!

Just got a PM from Jeff. In part, he stated: "Hi. My wrist is getting stronger.".

I'm glad he didn't sell off all of his magic. Hopefully, he'll be able to get back into his magic with gusto shortly.

I'm hoping for Jeff that some 'magic therapy' is in order for the nerve palsy. Keep the stuff!

Thank you all again. I just saw 2 specialists today. Also had some pretty painful tests. The good news is that I should be 100% in a couple months. I already have enough movement in my hand to do basic card manipulation.

The doctors have me going to physical therapy 3 times a week for 6 weeks, just to make sure that I don't lose muscle when my nerve is healed.

I was very scared that my favorite pastime, magic, would just be a memory. It looks like I'll be teaching my kids magic again in no time Smile

Take care folks

Just an update. My hand is as strong as ever and I am able to do everything I could before. I thought about not going to the physical therapy, but friends both here on the Café and at home convinced me to listen to the specialists and do the 2 months of therapy 3 times a week. I really think working with cards when I could barely hold them helped my hand get stronger. Maybe they will find that handling playing cards is a good form of therapy Smile

Again, thanks to those who posted here and sent me PM's. It kept my spirits up when I thought there was little hope I would ever do magic or play the piano again. There are a lot of decent caring people here, including Steve and his wife, who care about folks they never even met. That's a comforting feeling.

Thanks all.

Jeff

p.s. On a side note, I just found out last week I got my Ph.D in Psychology. It only took me 43 years and temporary loss of my right arm to get it. If anyone needs a GOOD Psychologist, FIND SOMEONE ELSE!!! Smile

That's great to hear Jeff! I just wanted to send you my best wishes and to remind you of The Little Man of Nuremburg. He was only about 4 feet tall, with no arms or legs. Yet, he was an accomplished magician and entertainer. The point of this little analogy, Jeff, is that MAGIC IS IN THE MIND and not in your hands.

To give up a passion and an art that you love because of a physical limitation would do a great disservice to all of those diabled people out there who wake up every morning, go out and do the best they can. don't GIVE UP.

I know it's easier to say from the outside looking in, but it's true. Life is full of challenges. It's how you handle those challenges that really matters.
