For effect on the audience, I would have to nominate this one. I read of a case a long time ago (wish I could remember who it was but I can't) where the magician stated he was about to perform a "sawing in half" illusion. He asked for a volunteer from the audience, and a gentleman came to the stage and entered the box. The magician proceeded to saw him in half, and separated the box halves. The volunteer reacted in shock, and his head/torso jumped out of its box and went running about the stage and then out into the audience on his hands. Apparently many audience members actually fainted from shock. I would have LOVED to have seen that...
It turns out the magician had found a set of identical twins where one of them had lost his legs in an accident. How often do you get an opportunity like that, to turn someone's tragedy into one of the greatest illusions of all time (IMHO)? I also just saw "Portal" in the new Copperfield show, and I found it more convincing than any other illusion I have seen, including his flying. -bigwolf {*}

The greatest illusion I ever saw was the Broom Suspension, as performed by the late Aldo Richiardi. When I worked with him. He had a special flange screwed under the stage floor. Therefore eliminating the need to have the telltale platform. So when you watched him it was just: A Magician, a Girl, 2 Brooms and a Stool on an empty stage. This made it look like an impromptu trick! The music he used was fantastic. And his choreography and showmanship has never been equaled!

I have to vote the Origami. Based on the combination of what makes an Illusion perfect. Effect, Design, Theme, Method and Presentation possibilities. The Origami Box fulfills all categories 100% which is an incredibly hard task to accomplish for a Creator. My hats off to Jim Steinmeyer as I hold him as one of the greatest inventors/innovators of all time.

Metamorphosis - only stage illusion i perform - chose it for my love of it's history and stunning effect.
DC's Flying - saw it live years ago - beautiful! Interlude - kinda creeps me out - but still love it. Asrah - even knowing how it works doesn't ruin it. and the worst - ANYTHING with a "deceptive" thin base. |

The #1 illusion of all times had to be something Copperfield performed. The greatest illusions we can perform are metamorphosis and origami.
Merry Christmas to all. |

I loved the Farco brothers version of the metamorphosis, It blew me away. One of the brothers was locked in a trunk by an assitant and she stood on top and in one secound he was on top and he took the top off and the sides fell showing a tiger! Great stuff.
And the worst illusion ever was DC escape from Alcatraz. What was he thinking it was horrible and very played out. Just plain stupit. DA Oh yeah I'm a huge copperfeild fan but I'm just not a fan of that. DA |

Levent: I would agree 100% of your feelings about the Richiardi Broom Suspension. He was like a Bull Fighter/Matador the way he moved. The energy and excitement he brought to this as palpable.

Keep in mind, Mina, that David Copperfield's Elevator is, in fact, Jim Steinmeyer's Elevator, originally performed by Doug Henning.
I do love the addition of the retractable shade walls and flying the Elevator above the stage floor. Whether these additions were David's ideas or John Gaughan's (who built the prop), I do not know.
It's all in the reflexes.

I would have to say "Mascot Moth" as it combines many different occurrences to take place in order to pull off the one effect. Since I really haven't seen it performed by anyone other than Henning, this is probably my favorite performance of it!
