I just obtained a second-hand Hotleads but it came without any instructions.
Anyone who has it, could you PM me on how to prepare the cards etc? Thanks in advance, Matt |

I just got a Hot Leads myself today. And I'm having a little bit of trouble keeping the fire on for longer than like two seconds. Also, if you prepare more then one card, do you keep all the prepared cards in the same pocket? The instructions aren't the greatest so anyone with experience, if you can please email me with tips/better instructions, ideas or whatever for me to get this thing to work, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

Durgy: Why on earth would you want the fire on for more than two seconds ?
It's supposed to be a whoosh and then it's over. tracematt: I can't look at my directions right this moment, but if nobody else posts in the meantime I can look them up later tonight. I haven't used it in a bit, but I would want to get every exact detail correct, since it involves lighter fluid and fire.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Hey Mystician,
Sorry, I should have been more clear. Not only can I not get the flame for last more then 2 seconds but it's not big at all... and I can't get it to look smooth. (ie. pull the card out of my wallet and it's on fire). And also I'm not sure exactly how to prepare the cards properly either. Perhaps whatever you PM to tracematt, you can forward to me as well. Thanks, I appreciate it. Any other tips would also be appreciated. Durgy |

Hey Guys
I do not understand what you are not getting. The instructions are pretty clear on how to prepare your cards. Take 6 to 8 cards and do what it says in the instructions. Then put them inside the vinyl pocket. Jim

A friend of mine bought one after he saw mine (Thanks Jim!) and it isn't rocket science.
Use it per the instructions, and you will have a scary big flame, that you have to shake the card vigorously to put out (after letting the card's corners get toasted for extra impact). I can only imagine having a problem as described, if you got bad "fuel". BroDavid

I want to chime in and agree with "it isn't rocket science".
I mean, in a pinch I have just held a fan of cards and "prepared" them haphasardly in midair... It would be pretty hard to mess up the prep I think, just do a reasonably sized area and you should be good to go! |

Hello,
Take 6 to 8 business cards and actually dip them into the fluid, about 1/4 of the length of the card. Then place them into the vinyl pouch that is inside the window flap. Read that again...inside the flap. If you are only testing one or two cards at a time then that may be you problem also...as the fluid will evaporate from air getting to the cards. If that does not fix the problem then I bet you have a plastic card, or laminated from both sides. The Hot leads is for regular card stock cards. If your card is laminated on one side then place the side that has absorbed the fluid, flame side down. Good luck...see you in Blackpool next year. I will showing some new product! Pm me if you have anymore questions Jim

I assume that if you have laminated cardsthen this effect will not work as well or not at all?

WOL,
That is correct. The cards have to be able to absorb some lighter fluid. A single sided laminate will work. Jim

I've used them for over a year now.
I'd suggest the fluid needs to be topped up evry 15-20 mins or so (to ensure the same quality of flame that is), which is no problem whatsoever. |

But not very practical if you are performing over a few hours......

In my lecture I talk about the practical use of Hot Leads. There are threads on this very subject. If you have prepeared the wallet correctly, Hot leads will be ready to go 15 hours from the time you prepare it. However....if you have a 16 hour magic show.... then hot leads is going to bite.

Personally, I found that the tilt angle matters. If I hold the wallet in my hand slanted downward, with the edge furthest from me clostest to the floor, I get a better light, whereas if I hold it too far tilted up the spark does not catch on the card.
Hope that helps.

Just a little tip on getting the fluid on the cards. I place the cards in the vinyl jacket, I then use a small ink fill bottle that I received with my refill ink. It has a very small metal like tube with a cap on it. I always have it ready with naptha. If I see the fulid is drying out, I take the squeeze bottle and squirt some fluid into the vinyl pocket where the cards are. Your alway ready to go. You can carry the bottle in your pocket. Try it you will like it. Works for me... Never had a problem that there is no fluid on the cards to ignite.

Spurlock, thanks for the tip!
I just took my Hot Leads wallet out for the first time in a while. I love the reactions from it. And the creativity put into it is definately one in a million. Thanks for bringing this to us Jim. |
