I am fairly new to mentalism and have often heard talk of "pre show" work. What exactly is this, and how does it help with the rest of the performance.

I know some magicians appear to be against this type of work, why is this?

Craig,

Pre show can be many things, and is exactly as it sounds. Marc Paul has good thoughts on this, and Richard Osterlind also in Practical mental mysteries (a great book).

I hope this helps, PM me if you have any further questions.

Go buy 13 steps by corinda as it is where most people start. Discussing in this thread will approach exposure very quickly which is one of the arguments why a lot of performers have left the Café..

I have, and have read, Corinda's the 13 steps. I just wanted to see how the PS work could be used in todays enviroment (as apposed to the music halls as discussed in Tony's book)

Craig, read everything you can on Corinda, Maven, Waters, Osterlind, Banachek, Riggs, etc, and you'll find many things on preshow work.
In the meantime, as Shrink suggested, this is something that would be better covered in the secret sessions or via PMs.
Until then keep reading everything you can and you'll find the answers.

Hey there Bobser,

Just popped in to say “hello”. Hello!

I tried looking on your profile for your website, but can’t find any reference to it. I’m just interested because I see your signature says “pro magician/mentalist hynotist (sic) based in scotland.” I just wondered if I know you? (You’re not Max, Don or Andy, are you? As members of the Edinburgh Meeting of the Minds group, that WOULD be embarrassing!)

I’m familiar – though not in the biblical sense - with Colin McLeod, Shrink, Messrs Heron, along with numerous other pro's who are not on The Magic Café, but I don’t think I’ve seen one of your shows, or even met. Have we? Just curious. Keen to meet up if you’re based anywhere near the Central Belt.

Best wishes,

Drew McAdam

Just realised, I probably should have PM'd that... hang on... it's PM'd!

As to pre show work and patter, Banachek has some amazing and very valuable thought in his 2005 lecture notes.

Quick question, maybe not the place for this -- but if you had to have one of the 3 following books on an island, which would you choose?

Mind Myth and Magick

Theater of the Mind

Corinda's 13 steps

???

Just Curious.

P. S. If I could only choose one... 13 Steps... whole careers wait inside.
