This weekend, I am building a close-up table. It is going to be a semi-circle top with a keyboard base. I want to make some sort of sign to hang on the table. I will use it for mostly side-show magic. I want people to know that I am a magician and to come watch me perform. What should I have printed on the banner/sign? Should I have my phone number, name, company name, etc?
Thanks, Tyler |

If your intention is to get a crowd together, I would avoid business information. Get a feeling of an art style you like ( http://www.bannerqueen.com may be a good example for you) and feature in large bold letters and plain language what you are giving to your audience (AMAZING, BIZZARE, WONDERS OF THE UNIVERSE, MIRCLES WHILE YOU WAIT . . .etc) Your may also want to have a large graphic depicting some sort of amazing promise you are making. Take one of your effects and grandise it. For example, if you do a cut and restore rope, you could have a picture of the rope magically fusing together and caption it "JOINED FOR ETERNITY!" Another attention getting trick you could do is to have some sort of puzzle or riddle on your banner. This will cause people to stop to read it. While they are stopped, strike up a brief conversation and invite them to stay for the show.
Most importantly, make the banner fun, colorful, and simple to read. Even if you do something like an invisible deck, don't try to describe the effect on the banner, just say, "I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING! JUST ASK ME . . ." Your business information is very important, but when people are walking by your table, they don't want to be sold a future show, they want to be entertained right now. Promise them that, then before they leave, make sure they know who you are and how they can contact you in the future. Good luck, Richard |

"Ask me how I can make your day"
"The fastest hands you'll ever see" (Braging sometimes works very well) "One man...52 Pieces of Paper" "Yes....I do parties" "Master Magician" "Magician (And A Good One Too!)" I'm sure there are many many things you could throw in there. I'd also include yor name someplace. When people start to leave they may say things like, "That was was excellent! What was his name again?" They will immediately turn around and look for it. "Oh there it is...Tyler_Magician....I'll have to remember that." Best of luck, Chris

Thank you Chris. I am building my table tomorrow, or atleast getting all of the materials. I will also keep thinking about the sign.
-Tyler Wow, I just finished the table top and it looks great. I am using a keyobard stand for the base. Pictures coming soon. For the sign, I am thinking of having my name and a quick line like listed above. Should I put MAGIC or MAGICIAN? -Tyler |

If you are doing sideshow magic, you need a sideshow banner. I'd say avoid anything but the kind of hyperbole already suggested by others. If someone wants to book you, you give them a business card with all that stuff. The purpose of the banner is to stop traffic. You will know that you did it right if people have their kids pose in front of it for pictures.
And I am old-fashioned. Forget the print shop. Paint it in acrylics on canvas, or get someone to do that for you. You can see pictures of some of mine here. You can see a small banner on my flea circus in the pictures here. I did the flea circus banner in a day. Have a look at some of the sideshow art at Sideshow World: http://www.sideshowworld.com/ Good luck! Yours, Paul |

I really like those sideshow banners. I don't have the money to get the pictures made, but I might be able to get the same text as the flea circus banner. I'll see what I can do.

Then maybe you could get your small table banner painted like a large side show banner. That might work.
When Paul Kozak and Amazing Johnathan had the show MAYHEM going (I was the stage manager and built some of the bigger props) in Reno and Las Vegas about 15 years ago AJ had had a sideshow type banner painted by an artist in Los Angeles. It really set the tone and mood for the show. Dr Wilson is absolutely right about it. Good luck with it. Sounds like a fruitful project. My across the back fence neighbor is about 80 years old. He still works as chief mechanic for The Cumberland Valley Shows which is fair outfit featuring a midway, rides and sides. He says you can set up a show in the middle of a corn field and in five minutes a crowd starts gathering. Great old showman, Winston Whited from Lebanon TN. -=tabman

Are there any reasonable (under $100) tables that can be purchased vs. made. Looking for design like that used by Daryl and Green in their dvds. Square table, removable screw in legs, molding and felt that can be added later? Any sources, preferably chain stores.
Life is a test. It is only a test. If this had been a real life, you would have been given further instructions on where to go, and what to do.

My table is done...and I am working on getting a sign made. I am on vacation for the next week and a half. They are supposed to be designing my sign and e-mailing me the proofs. I have to call them today to see what is going on with it.
-Tyler Great, I got it made and it looks great. I have a 10"x12" black sign. It has my name and "The fastest hands you'll ever see." I have the writing in white and outlined in red. Thanks for the input guys... -Tyler |
