CardMagic, I would like to know more about this book.I won this book at Magicauction.com. I have looked on this forum and themagiccafe. I could only find this book at only one site and only one magic shop. I am very surprised that there is no info on this book anywhere. All I know is this:

184 pages with 727 clear illustrations.
The Book has several dozen effects by some of the legendary creators like Ed Marlo, Bill Simon, Gene Maze, Ken Krenzel, Derek Dingle, Darwin Ortiz, Harry Lorayne, Phil Goldstein, Russel Barnhart, Vincent Sabatino and John Racherbaumer.

I think that's because it's out of print. You're lucky to have won it.

Whats your favortie effect from Cardmagic by Richard Kaufman? I'm working on the proverbal hole routine, and its really kicking my butt but I feel it will be worth the work.

Its available though. Last time I checked Dennymagic site it had 2 copies 50$ each.

Its the book that got me into tabled palm work. I loved many items there and re-worked some stuff from it. I recommend it if you find it for a good price.

There is a really underrated Marlo load I used a lot in casual performances. I use the handling of Quick 3 Way while concealing cards. A very climax for HaLo aces. The standup material is really cool. All Gene Maze's material in there are very good too.

Loads of stuff, its been 2 years since I opened the book, I might go back again ...

One reason you can't find info here is because the book came out so many years before the Café ever started. You'd have to go back to some older sources to find any reviews.

This was the book that got me into cards when it first came out.

I very much liked Number 9 Blue, (a color changing deck routine) Ham and Cheese is a nice sandwich effect, Strange Harmony, by Harry Lorayne is also very nice.

Plus, I like the tongue in cheek writing style (one that Kaufman never revisited, and I think is little embarrassed by today.)

I always thought it was one of the best books of that era. It should be a nice addition to your collection.

Richard Kaufman once mentioned the idea of combining CardMagic and CardWorks into one new volume. Maybe he can be persuaded to go ahead with the idea.

A very nice mix of card work. If you can get your hands on one, by all means do so.
This is just a brief contents description:

"Here is a wonderful book on card magic, not for the beginner, but for the serious student of the art. It is divided into two parts. Part one deals with close-up card magic and includes great routines and sleights by Racherbaumer, Levy, Krenzel, Kaufman, Maze, Simon, Marlo, Goldstein, Ortiz, Dingle and more. Over 50 sleights, moves, and effects. Part two of the book deals with an often neglected phase of card magic, Stand-Up Card Magic. In these pages you will find classic routines for platform and stage with a deck of cards including Kaufman's version of Phoenix Aces. 11 Stand up card routines that can play big for larger crowds. Leipzig and Cliff Green are but two famous magicians who did card magic on stage. Here is some great material."

(At Denny's today, Feras and others. Sold out.)

I have been toying with the idea of reprinting the book, and combining it with both the better material from CardWorks and also including the material in my lecture notes "Abstract."

But I'm *** busy and books are selling pretty poorly right now.

Richard,
When things calm down (and sales pick up Smile ), I would encourage you to pursue such a reprint. I expect that it would be very well received.

It's a shame to hear books are selling poorly. I get so much more out of books than DVDs and feel they offer better value.

Hard to believe books are selling poorly as I continue to buy expensive OOP books today to add to my collection of 35 years now. Just got your awesome copy of Greater Magic as well. But I am from the old school of magic where we read books all day and night, and collected thousands of them and still do. I love DVDS as well for seeing others perform, presentation styles, patter, and timing of sleights. But I started out with huge magic tomes and they are still very special to me. But I guess today's generation wants everything "instantly" and for free, or as cheap as possible which is why there are so many idiotic exposure videos on YouTube, they do not respect the art because they did not have to put in the work like we did back then and we had to earn our way.

All we had were old black and white magic catalogs with vague descriptions, line drawings, and we had to wait 10-12 weeks for out magic to arrive. These days people are mad if they don't get it in 2-3 days. They are too lazy to read books, which for me is a good thing as all the great stuff will remain hidden in them, and I can keep them to myself. Smile I still buy and read those catalogs as well.

You do realize that this thread is ten years old?

And, Kaufman's post was added six years ago.

No I did not bump it someone else did, I just responded. But so what, not much has changed since then. Just because a thread is old does not make it less valuable and does not mean no one should respond to it. Yet if someone makes a new one they are told to "do a search". I don't care though either way. I don't have time to look at every date nor do I care when it was posted. But it was bumped so I responded and the TOC is useful for future searches.

Book sales have recovered somewhat from when this thread originally started, which is why I reprinted CardMagic. I'll have several new books out this year, and several more in 2016! Smile
