PAEDO THE CLOWN
Bozo the Clown has been jailed for 3 years for the unspeakable - actually it is unclear from the reporting what he has been jailed for - He had already done 18 months for indecently assaulting an under 16yr old and it seems that his new jail sentence is based on his breach of his release conditions. The article details hikm kissing and cuddling a 3yr old, painting pictures with some under 16 yr olds and plaiting a girls hair (?) unfortunately I don't have the article otherwise I wouyld have typed it out verbatim. he was a blackpool based magician/clown and the article emphasised that he used his costume and clown status to lure and be close to young children - he is 63yrs old today - 12th june - I have done 3 kids shoe and it has been mentioned at each one It makes me more and more edgy - fortunately I don't wear makeup and I am considering removing the load wastecoat for an embroidered t shirt - as silly as all that sounds, after reading the article about the sick *** I feel paranoid and want to disassociate myself with the possibility of being thought of that way. Yes, I'm sure I'm being paranoid but its not the first time that this has happened in this country I'm off tomorrow to renew my Police check |

That has got to be the stupidest article I have ever read! What sort of rag is The Sun. What ever happened to reporting news in a fair and balanced way?
All we know from that article is that he "indecently assaulting a girl under 16". Yet the article fails to mention WHAT his crime was. Yet it implies that his other 'crimes' were:- -Dressing in red nose to get near children. (Most clowns DO, its their job) -Kissed and hugged a three year and gave her family money. (This is a stupid thing to do because of the IMPLICATIONS but is not illegal) -Gave bread to kids to feed the ducks. (Sorry "PROWLED" around giving bread to kids) -Did magic tricks and paintings for two girls under 16 and plaited their hair. -Held a girl around the legs whilst 'leering' at the camera. (see the photo for yourself) What a sordid piece of writing. Its pretty clear that this guy is guilty of SOMETHING but instead of actually reporting on it, they just imply that a whole bunch of innocent activities are the real crime! |

Ha, that's The Sun for you, Nick. It's a very popular tabloid over here unfortunately a large proportion of the British public aren't as astute as yourself at assessing its flaws.
It's very worrying for entertainers in the UK. |

This, I'm afraid, is indicative of todays society. As I haven't read the article, I'll refrain from commenting but it highlights a valid point touched upon by Graemesd.
A short time ago, I was taking a booking for a kids party when I was asked whether I had had a recent police check. My reply was that as I would never in a position where I would be a sole supervisor of any children, none was required. In fact, I insist upon other adults present (for crowd control mainly) as a condition of taking the booking. At the party, I asked about this and it turned out that she was a nursery school helper and so was part and parcel of her job. I share this to highlight that people actually have this in mind when booking a total stranger to entertain their kids. I also have two questions for discussion. 1. Should I have a voluntary police check done on myself? 2. If so, should it be included on my advertising literature? All views welcome.
The world is a wonderful place.
Let's make it more so. Steve |

Although I have yet to do a kid show, you do bring up a good point about the police check Steve. I think that it would be a good idea to have the police check, but there is no need to include it on your advertising literature. Just have it on you in case they ask.
And yes I do realize he asked this question a while ago, but I saw nobody had answered you. Cheers. |

I've only been asked twice in the last few years if I'm police checked, that's well over a 1000 shows, and only asked twice, both times I said no, and both times they STILL booked me. So what was the point in them asking?
A police check is only good up until the day it was done. A week/month/year later, it's worthless, any amount of crimes could have been commited after it was completed! As Steve Fowkes said, I also insist that there is ALWAYS at leaset TWO adults in the room at all times. I also ALWAYS have a line on the floor, the children are on one side and I'm on the other. This day and age is so difficult, you have to be really carefull, and sensible where kids are concerned. |

Billy I agree , In y real life I am a deputy coroner. I have been preforming for 35 years and have never been asked for a police check. But I can tell you that a police check is only good for the state your in here in the US. Most prditors move state to state and it would not show a abuse in another state. So they are fairly useless. If some one asked for a police check tell them they are welcome to run one on you if they like or offer up references of parties you have recently performed for. As children performers the times have changed. We all must be conscience of the hugs and the way children often show thier joy in our performance. I know my self when I am asked to pose for a photograph I always MAKE SURE BOTH MY HANDS ARE IN VIEW OF THE PHOTO. You never know when someone may accuse you of inaproppriate touching. Just my view.

Hi,
I missed this post earlier but also wanted to comment on it. I'd also agree that I wouldn't put it on my literature as that may plant the seed of doubt in someone's mind that wasn't there before. I would have it done however, just to be able to answer in the affirmative if someone asks. I've done thousands of shows and have only been asked one time if I had a background check. (I have had several done as many of my jobs I've had with kids required it.) Ironically, if someone in my city is employed working with kids or deals in a business that caters to children they MUST have one, no exceptions. Many childrens entertainers don't have a formal company or have a business licence so are able to get away with not having a background check done. Many jobs are not concerned if you have minor infractions in your history and it depends on the job you are seeking. For those involved in driving a public transport of some kind it would make sense they would have to have a clean driving record. For those working with kids, having a past minor infraction wouldn't necessarily set off red flags and they could pass the clearance but those that involve any crimes of violence would not. Fingerprinting is only done with highly sensitive jobs and not a pre-requisite either, for having a back ground check done..most times it just involves punching your name in the crime computer (CPIC) and see what comes up. They then give you a sealed envelope to give to your employer or may mail it to them. In our case they would just hand us the document that is stamped by the police department. Hope that helps anyone that has questions regarding the procedure. For those considering getting it done it's aprox 25 dollars and should be done yearly. I also agree with those that stated you should always have an adult in the room at all times, better yet two, to safeguard yourselves. Chrystal |
