I just had an idea for an effect. The magician gives his audience member his iPod to hold, tells them to put in the ear phones and then select a song to play. As the song is playing the mentalist looks deep into their eyes and tells them what song they are listening to.
If anyone has any ideas as how this effect could be acheived please PM me. (My first idea was using something called an iTrip) Also reply with any suggestions on presentation or similar effects |

Well, you can find different artists that presented the same song. Many old classics were remade by other artists.
So you have them look at a menu that has three or four artists and comment on the types of songs they sang... never mentioning the one that all four did. Have the person pick one of the artists at random and listen to the song. You then call out the song they are listening to. Greg

Sounds like an interesting way of doing it. If presented properly and the "playlist" function used. The audience may think it was a choice of songs from the entire iPod (which of course, you claim has 20,000 tracks on it) rather than the special limited playlist you allow them to choose from.
This could be interesting. |

I thought about developing a similiar effect were a spectator names a song they have been thinking of an press'es play on the I-pod or CD player and the song plays. My method was something along the lines of 4 sided triangle type preshow work.

I have one of the IPods, but I barely use it. I wondering if you can do something like an Add-a-No thing where you show that you have this extensive list of songs and they randomly make up numbers that are added and the person is told to go to that number on the playlist and listen to it.
Or, how about you show an IPod that has all different songs on one of the menus and you clip it onto the spectator and have him randomly scroll anywhere without looking and then press play and you know the song because as you clipped it on you pressed to another menu that only contains one song repeated over and over on the list. Or, slight they same as above... you show an Ipod that has all these songs and you clip it on the back of a spectator's belt hand have him randomly pick a song by scrolling and pressing play and you know the song because as you go behind him to attach the IPod you actually switch it for another one that only contains one song repeated over and over. Or, and I'm not sure if this is possible, the spectator scrolls through the IPod and sees a long list of various songs. He is told to randomly scroll and press play and you know the song. Well, I'm not a techno guy so I'm not sure if you can do this, but can you put in the same song over and over and just give each of them the names of other various songs so they see many names, but they are actually the same song. Yes all of the above would be possible.
It is also possible to get a device called an iTrip (I have one for use in the car) When attached to your iPod it transmits the song as an FM freq. which could be detected by any radio set at the right station. Again, the iPod could be used to reveal the name of a chosen card. After forcing a card, they are then told to select any song on the iPod. Each song is set up to play 10 seconds of the song before stopping and saying the name of the choosen card. Again, similar to Greg's idea but with an added "fail-safe": When you place the iPod on the persons belt, you slide the switch on top the the locked-position, this would mean that no matter how many times they move the dial or press the buttons the song wouldn't change. Once you've convinced the spectator that they have randomly chosen a song and started to play it, tell them to put on the headphones. And the song they will be listening to will be the one you preset as you attached it to their belt! (This is my fav. method so far) |

In a similar I-Poddy vein, Ernie Guderjahn's 'Balls Ahoy' pamphlet allows a spectator to think of any of their own favorite songs, puts your IPod earplugs in, presses play themselves, and their own thought-of favorite song comes up.
I have been giving these pamphlets away for free on my ebay auctions when buyers pay via paypal. (not a plug, as I'm out of auctions right now). There'll be about 30 copies left before they are out of print (150 copies run), in case anyone is interested. It well may be an astounding trick, but it is not an astounding solution.

I think I'm going to keep a note of these ideas (if that's okay with everyone) and compile them into a little non-profit e-book

Hi Durgy- Not to hijack this thread...I think H&R Magicbooks may have some copies left. I've sent a copy to Steelefusion to add to his repetoire of IPod effects.

Why not load in the same song with different names, wheel through to show that they are all different and then plug it into a speaker. Ask them to spin the dial randomly without looking and then stop when they feel happy. When they press play it will play a well known song - you can then force this on them anyway you like. you could also set this up as a different playlist so that you show it all to be different and under misdirection switch playlists so that they can only select one song.
I have an interesting thing I am developing with an iTrip but I am not going to tell you. Actually, I though of a presentational idea whilst typing this. You get one spectator to choose a song from a list of the thousands of songs on the iPod, another spectator spins the wheel hits play and voila! No pre-show, no stooges and no Th***b T*p used! |

Forget forcing and cards, etc, present the effect exactly as you describe it. I think you were on the right track with the iTrip.
Give the audience member your iPod & a pair of large(ish) closed backed headphones to "ensure no-one else can hear what they're listening to.... smaller headphones have a tendency to leak sound", etc. They select the track, press play and you divine the music. Method? Modified 'iTrip' or 'AudiaX' (I bought an AudiaX a while ago & it has a range of about 20m max, but not bad sound quaity), stripped from the housing, and placed inside one of the cups of the headphones. Transmits literally straight from their head to a receiver placed wherever you want it! If it was me, I'd be tempted to use the same receiving method as another well known chap kindly demonstrated recently in his show. Not wanting to stray into any more exposure than the other threads here, you understand. Perhaps have the audience member facing away from you and present it as a realtime prediction effect rather than a divination. Takes more of the attention away from the point of your actual divination. The only other drawback I'd foresee is some smart git having their radio tuned into your transmission frequency, or it already being used by a commercial station. If you have any knowledge of electronics, or have a friend who does, it may be worth making an AM transmitter from scratch. Either that or make an FM transmitter which uses a very obscure channel. Any good? |

Effect: You show your I-Pod to contain all different songs, then someone randomly picks one and imagines it playing in their mind, you name the song...oh and you are at the other side of the room.
Method: Why complicate things?, go to the list of thousands of songs, show them they are all different. Now when you stop on one remember what it is and then turn it face down and put it on HOLD. Now face down let them randomly spin the wheel to pick one. As it is on hold it will never leave the one you peeked. They now imagine the song playing and you name it. You could also have them listen to it, but you'd need to handle the I-Pod again by switching off hold...and why bother doing that when them thinking about it playing is far stronger. Col. PS: Would rather this NOT go into an e-book as I feel it touches on a few other performers routines in one way or another, therefore lets keep it strictly for Café Members . And if I-Pod's do become the new book test, I'd like to think of my routine as the 'Hoy' of 'I-Pod Tests'

Colin your idea was almost identical to mine above the only difference is that it wasnt clipped to the belt.
But still, glad to see so many effects came up with already! |

I have a variation of a Musical Telepathy routine in my manuscript
that uses an Ipod to reveal the one song in 16,000 that a spectator has picked from a catalogue listing of songs. Actually suggested to me by Chuck Hickok who was one of the first to read it. (manuscript available in the next few months) |

The iTrip is software programable to most any FM station directly from the iPod. It would be a great choice for installing in a headphone due to this feature. - Greg Owen Following on some of the ideas here, how about having someone pick a name out of your phone directory on your Palm? You divine the phone number they are looking at. - Greg Owen
