I was messing around with a story for the card trick, 'Reset', when I hit upon the story of the 'tunnels of Cu Chi'. It's a true story from Viet Nam war when the Viet Cong would appear out of nowhere in the middle of Saigon. In my trick, I use the empty card box as a 'tunnel'! I also have a story for 'Cannibal Kings' which is instead 'Cannibal Imperialists'. So many patter stories are fashioned around gambling, relationships, sci fi, religion, etc. I wondered if there were any politically provocative stories that go along with tricks (not limited to cards). Incidentally, I also like bizarre stories, but I think this (and not bizarrre magic) is the right forum for this topic.

"The tunnels of Cu Chi" led to a large political Coup. It was known as the "Cu Chi Coup."

I'm sorry.

I also think there should be more leftist magical themes. Maybe something about money being an illusion, that money has no intrinsic value, and we are all slaves to this mass-produced fabrication. Maybe call it The Miser's Nightmare.

Cu Chi Coup... I love it!
Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.

I take the more subtle approach of emphasizing team work and working together for the benefit of all. its tough to be on the left when I get paid like a true capitalist or to preach my proloteriate dreams as I mingle at a black tie cocktail party, so goes the struggle.

Good point, Oliver. Until the revolution occurs, I will still be acccepting money as payment. I do have this crazy idea of making one year The Year of Mystery Payment, when private parties (mostly bdays) can pay me according to how much they enjoyed the show, and according to their financial means.

I'm actually surprised that anyone replied to this column (by the way, thanks for 'Cu Chi Coup' which I use in my patter, excellent). I think I was searching for themes that veered away from sexism and racism (eg Cannibal Kings often has a patter about cannibals eating pygmies ... c'mon now). If you mess around with the Twins card trick, e.g., you can add some humor to men and women’s relationships. I use the Joker to sometimes be a spy against the royalty, etc. Incidentally, getting paid does not make one a capitalist. Now here's a provocative question ... would you perform a private show for royalty??? Who do you really like to entertain? Mozart performed for royalty; but he really loved to perform for the masses, and loved to see his own work buffooned. i.e. he had a sense of humor. I'm all for that! Thanks for all the replies.

Would she woo? I pull the temperence tarot from my well-laundered magic wallet and ask audience members if they've seen this woman recently.

Lynnef, I would perform for royalty: everyone needs magic. And you're right, geting paid doesn't necessarily make one a capitalist. But a true revolutionary would burn their dollar bill and NOT restore it.

Isso, you're an endearingly strange non-sequiter!

Thank you,Todsky. We've inquired unsuccessfully in Lausanne so it's on to Basel seeking her whereabouts and the floating circus city tethered near there.

I think you guys should perform all your magic on a "pro bono" basis. Down with Capitalistic American pigs!

Please follow my advice, as I could use the extra (paid) work.

Ever since I developed the routine in the Bay Area in 1978 I have been performing my version of Don Alan's one bowl routine as "Dr. A's Illustrated Lecture on Capitalism, Socialism, and the Coming Revolution."

I've carved out something of a niche as "The Amazing Dr. A -- Marxist Economist Magic, Mind Reading, and Economic Analysis."

Speaking of performing for royalty, did anyone catch Stephen Colbert's roast of Bush? perhaps magicians are a bit like the jesters of old and have some freedom to criticise that others might not. And mix it with humor and illusion.
