I'm in the process of building my own illusions from Mayne's Illusion FX and Osborne's Easy Build Illusion book. I was wondering what the best wood to use to build these illusions? Something light weight and easily portable. I was thinking Balsa, but what will with stantd a lot of performances?

With out a doubt use Baltic Birch, it finishes well is reasonably lightweight and affordable, I just yesterday bought from Paxtons lumber in KC Mo and the 1/2 5' x5' pieces came in at $21 per piece if you bought 5 or more.

Is Baltic Birch something that I can get at say a Home Depot store, or do I have to go to a lumber yard? Also, is it easy to paint, and what kind of paint would you recomend?

Baltic Birch is not often available at the Home Depot, but it can be obtained at most good lumber yards. It paints like a dream and many illusion builders have used it.

Yes I aggree the baltic birch is a dream to work with. With a carbide blade it cuts very clean. I have used it for the Osborne ver. of zig-zag and that rabbet that you cut for the piano hinge matched up perfect with the ply layers.
as far as finishing, I have made some asrah tables as well as sub trunks and used a simple wipe off gel stain and people swear its solid wood. using this wood for building your own stuff will save you time in the long run.
