Good discussion guys.
I think that we're all pretty much saying the same thing, we're just using different words. Ken, some of my "prepared" ad libs also came about because of an improv response I had at some point, and some of my funniest lines also came from my audiences. Tony, where do you present your lecture on acting for magicians? I'd love to attend. Larry |

The Perfect Routine?
The dialog, even if it's not strict, can make or break any trick. The patter Dai Vernon uses in some of his "Stars of Magic" tricks fit him and the tricks. To me, his routines are perfect. Not perfect for everyone but for him, yes. |

Larry,
Thanks for asking. I've only been doing the lecture in the Chicago area. It's based on a workshop I've done all over the country for theatre companies but illustrated with lots of magic. If you PM me your e-mail, I'll send the flyer and description. Thanks again for your interest. Tony |

I just want to thank everyone for all of their invaluable insights and giving me some direction. I've been reading Maximum Entertainment and I guess it's time to visit Tarbell and maybe ASCANIO Vol 1. I guess when it comes to close-up I'm still trying to find my style and decide what I really like and want to stick with, those effects that I want to master and blend into a routine. Thank-you all again, this is a great thread.

Randwill, as everyone else has said, I will say it to emphasise it, what you have said is completely true and I couldn't have said it better myslef. Magic is becoming to commercialised with all these crap new tricks coming out with people trying to just make money or become famous, but they will inly appear famous to magicians who buy the tricks,a dn only if the magicians who buy them even like the tricks. A lot of tricks are also just revamps of old tricks as well, whereas the classics are better. If people spent more time perfecting tricks and making sure they work in th real world, the magic world would be a better place. More magicians should be encouraged to come up with their own ideas and tricks that they can perform, and keep to themsleves, make themselves different to the rest

Chuds - I would agree up to a point... BUT only if you can enhance the patter and make your own props which many can't... the classics can be improved - I do it Many tricks are individually great tricks BUT can be improved by removing the "playing card" element...
I will hopefully be bringing one out shortly - it uses a number of classic tricks but puts them in context and gives them a common theme - effectively I will be selling the props not the tricks - call it an accessory that can create a perfect set...
catch you later
