Hi: Some time ago there was a post for a Needled Balloon routine. It was an excellent routine involving a balloon's fear of shots ("What do balloons really, really hate? Shots!"). If anyone can remember that one, please post. Thanks, Marty.

Marty:
I can understand wanting information on a great routine for use for inspiration. However, just make sure not fall into a trap too many magicians end up in. That trap is to take a routine of someones and do it just like that person did. That does nothing but create magic clones. Use it to spark your own imagination and creativity to develop a routine that is truly unique to you and your character you present. I am sure you already know this any ways. Just thought I would mention it for those who may not. Good luck working on your routine. Kyle

Sounds like a variation on Michael Ammar's routine (published in his book, The Magic of Michael Ammar).
One of these might be the thread you are seeking: Cafe thread titled... Needle through balloon routining Cafe thread titled... What is your favor......so far.) - Donald

Hi: Thanks for the replies. I know what you mean about being original and letting your personality show through in your performances, but every once in a while, a routine comes along that's really creative and deserves recognition. After all, no matter how faithfully one might copy another magician's routine, wouldn't it come off differently because of personality differences? I'm a musician too, and the same thing happens there. If I copy another musician's licks I can't help but infuse my own feelings, perception, shading, color, etc (that is, personality), and I usually come up with something slightly different then what I'm coping anyway--It's as if you can't get away from yourself. Anyway, even if I was to copy another magic routine, if it was done well, wouldn't the kids enjoy it? Thanks again, Marty.

Yes, but the point is, you are being a magic clone. You are not pushing your own self to be creative or to really find out exactly who YOU are on stage and how YOU would present it.
Another point is that one magician's routine and effect work for him because he or she has spent so much time into it and their personality and theme and character fit as a unified whole to make the routine work. If you try and change any of this, by adding in your own personality etc. , it just will not work nearly as well. You are so much better off forgettting the routines of other magicians. Certainly LEARN from them, but then put them aside and work on routines that fit you, your character and who you are on stage. Your audiences deserve this of you. Kyle

If you copy somebody elses routine verbatum, then there is nothing to set you apart or make you stand out from other magicians You would just be following somebody elses glory, but you will be in the shadows.
It is never good to copy others, you will never be fully noticed that way. |

You also never grow with your magic. By forcing yourself to think and be creative, it soon becomes habit. When it becomes habit, then your magic gets better, your routines get better and you get remembered for who YOU are. That is important.

But guys, we're just talking about one trick here. The rest on my act is as original as I can make it, and there are no other magicians in my area. It's not like I'm stealing from someone who will loose money because I'm taking from their livelihood, and no one will be watching to see if I'm a clone of someone else's trick--they'll just be enjoying the magic. Thanks, Marty.
