I am having trouble finding an on-line source for a plate lifter--nothing fancy, just the novelty item with multitudinous uses for seances, mentalism, and the like.
Suggestions and urls would be appreciated. |

I've actually just made my own by going to toy stores and looking for small creatures that jump. I've seen them in frogs and spiders.
Basically it's just a long plastic line with a bulb attached on one side and a small bladder on the other. Press the bulb and the bladder inflates. You can find this jumping creatures in most large toy stores or novelty shops and magic shops. Greg

I agree with Greg 110%. I purchased commercial lifters last year and they were (insert expletive here)!
The best one I found was the big black spider, gently take the bits out of the spider and re-assemble. How did that cup of tea on the saucer move like that!!! Thank you Dollar store! Kay

Google for "plate lifter". (in quotes)
or 'palpitator'. You'll find them. |

Those are the ones I tried out Jaz, the bladder is not a very heavy material, and the attempt to inflate one that was stuck only split it at the seam.Alas the quality seems to not really be there for these in this day and age.
number two of the attempt (I bought two so I would have a back up) never did fully open, the rubber seemed to be glued in the center. The heavier material from the jumping critter, while coiled up in normal configuration, can be either rubber cemented to a small piece of 3x5 card to make it flatten out, or break out the old seal a meal and shorten it a bit. (though if setting up before hand, just a bit of tape at the fore and aft ends will do the trick) k

Thanks K,
I have one that's several years old and didn't know the quality had worsened. |

Palpitator is the bladder effect of movement, the plate lifter is the double suction cup.

If the Penn & Teller book "How to Play with Your Food" is still available, that should have it included. I still have mine from like 15 years ago, and it still works great...

Jumping insects typically use a bladder that unrolls when inflated. Wouldn't this be too bulky for most magical applications?

A remote cable release for cameras can be adapted for this. It is stronger and has a much longer tube than the usual ones. In these days of digital cameras, I am not sure how easily obtainable these are now. The difficulty is adapting the release to some kind of bladder as well as finding a suitable bladder.

Hi all -
Professional locksmiths use a tool called "Air Wedge" to open car doors. It is so strong that you can push open car doors or windows. This device costs in the range of $20.00 and $30.00. This is not inexpensive but it is almost indestructable. It can lift even the heaviest tables. Best, G. |

Jeez, another case of the magical disappearing post! I just replied to Giacomo, and it has already vanished! All I said was I thought the Air Wedge was great information. Jeez! Jeez!
