Needle thru Balloon:
Does anyone know the first man to figure this out? I wonder what in the world made him think of it? As a kid, before learning the standard version, I learned from a magic book from the library that if you put a piece of Scotch Tape over any part of a balloon it would be possible to stick a straight pin through the tape and the balloon would not pop. I thought that was cool. Ahhh, I was such a little magic geek. I was a theater geek as well so there was a double whammy. I learned how to out run the football team. So when I saw the version with the long needle I bought it. I used that thing so long. At least till I was 17. I saw a Magician do it onstage recently in a flashy production routine. Silks, candles, canes, doves, parrots, and needle thru balloon. Wow, it had been a while since I had seen it. Then I wondered who in the world would have thought that up? Will

I think it was Tom Ransom and was published in The New Phoenix. This was one of the first tricks I ever bought.
Does anyone have any handling tips for it? I always had trouble keeping it from deflating quickly after the needle was insterted.

I used spit to lubricate the needle when I first started. This caused the needle to rust so I switched to Vasoline which was much classier than running the needle through my mouth and I think slowed down the deflation.
I haven't done it in years though. I have seen guys do it with feathers to neon rods since then. What year did Tom Ransom come out with this? Will

This trick is so close to the coin through dental dam until one would wonder if a dentist had anything to do with it.

The first time I saw this trick that I can remember was in my 8th grade science class. But even than it didn't really look like magic to me.

I may be wrong but this effect received tremendous popularity when aired on a national special by Doug Henning. (I think) I remember buying this from Tony Spina at Tannen's probably in the late 70's.
I found it a few months ago, packed away. It is now called rusty needle/broken balloon! |

I have heard that rubber cement can create that special spot? Anyone tried this? If so, going through the side of a balloon would look different.

Never tried the rubber cement. I always use vasoline to help slow down the deflation. I was not using enough when I first used it but I have learned to use as much needed to help. I make ny own needles, because they are so easy to make. I think it is a great effect. I use a routine I found in an old copy of MUM. I blow up the balloon and draw a face on it with a magic marker. I then pretend to hypnotize the ballon. It is funny and the kids laugh so it is worth it. I had often thought about buying one of those self lubrication wands but just never did. Does anyone here use the want?

My first exposure to this was Doug Henning, as well. I don't think it was on the market before then, at least I didn't notice. It's a great bit for the street.
Here's something you don't know--you can do this trick with a piece of uncooked spaghetti. Lube with olive oil, extra virgin, of course. A buddy showed me this a long time ago. Whatever possessed him to try it must have been the same spirit that inspired the original. Frankly, he didn't say. Another tip on this--have you ever noticed that no matter how long they've been doing this, magicians all seem to squint, just at the moment of truth? We all fear the pop, even when we know how it works. Even if you know it's silly, there's a bit of primal fear there. So that's why when I do it, I have an emotional spectator hold the balloon. It ramps up the tension, and wirtes its own lines.

Doesn't Vaseline breakdown latex which is usually used for this effect?

Toronto's own Tom Ransom invented the Needle Through Balloon.

In Doug Henning's version, the needle goes through the side of the balloon. I had learned the tape version from a library book when I was eight or nine, and the marketed version when I was about thirteen, but I thought Doug's performance was much nicer.
I would love to have a video of him performing it. Amos McCormick

Does anyone know the source for the method used by Henning where the needle went through the side instead of the top of the balloon?
I remember him holding the balloon by the knot during the penetration - looked very good. I tried tape, but that doesn't work on the side of a balloon. |

Actually Henning put it through the ends of the balloon. I was not sure but have an old video tape of him doing it. It goes through the ends just like the marketed version. You also were able to get a holder for the needle to keep it sharp and lubricated. It looked like a magic wand. Take a piece of pvc pipe, put a generous amount of vasiline in the tube and put corks in both ends. Put a small hole in the center of one cork and insert the needle. When you pull it out of the tube it will have the right amount of lub on it and it will still be sharp.

Actually, the video I have and a pic in "The Master Illusionists" shows him holding the balloon by the knot and putting it through the side.
Maybe he did it both ways through his career - but the side version looks a little better, in my opinion. |

My third grade school teacher Mrs. Sanders (She loved science. It's about 1962.) did this in class. She was realy a neat teacher.
Posted: May 24, 2006 9:03pm Mrs. Sanders, also drove a straight pin through a quarter and put straw through a potato. It wasn’t magic, just science. Posted: May 24, 2006 9:09pm What year was it, Tom Ransom and was published in The New Phoenix?
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.

I'm curoius, what kind of routine did Henning use.
This is one of those effects that somehow I can not find an imaginative routine, and I don't like the idea of saying "here look at what I can do." Any routine suggestions appreciated. Bob |

This thread might be dead but Michael Ammar has a nice routine that makes sense.
It can be found in the Magic of Michael Ammar - Billy the Hypnotized balloon (I think) Kevin |

If you read New Phoenix No.311 published July 9,1954, you will find Tom Ransom was decribing other method than OP mentioned. Mr.Ransom mentioned the use of Scotch Tape, but he used tape to shut the hole after removing the needle. He did not push needle thru tape.
