Hiya, Magi:
I've started creating models for resin casting using plasticine, which is an ideal medium for the purpose. Trouble is, I get tool marks from the sculpting and don't know how to burnish them away so they don't reproduce in the mold. When I make lost-wax models, I can burnish the carved model using heat; this results in a smoother mold and less finishing work on the casting. Can I do the same thing with plasticine or is there a similar technique available? Thanks, Leland |

You are using the plastilina to make the mold itself? Or to make the master for the mold?
You can use very gentle heat on plastilina, be careful it is oil based. Also, it is not unheard of to give it a plaster or latex dip for a thin coating of a smooth surface. I tend to just use hand heat and rub my fingers over the surface to get it smooth, but I likely depends on the size of the item. If you use the small paddle type clay tools, they can also be used to smooth things out. kay

Very smooth tooling, dipped frequently in water.

You can use a glue type brush (cut down to increase it's stiffness if you like) dipped in isopropyl alcohol and scrubbed on the surface to get rid of bigger ridges. You can also continue (if a good quality plasticene is used) with softer brushes and sponges and alcohol.
Once the alcohol is evaporated fully you can smooth with fingers and or flash the surface with a micro blowlamp to get a glassy finish.

I concur with the alcohol. I've used it for cleaning plasticine from molds.

Thank you, Magi, your input is greatly appreciated. My plasticine model looks better already, and I'll be making a mold from it soon.
Thanks again, Leland |
