I'll cast my vote for Gregory Wilson as well. Most all of his material is really good. For your impromptu idea he may just fit the bill perfectly.

I also second learning rubberband effects. Very visual and impromptu. Dan Harlan's DVDs and Michael Ammar's "Classic Renditions volume 2" are great resources to learn basic rubberband magic.
For coin magic I recommend getting Bobo's book along with Michael Ammar's "Complete introduction to coin magic". A great and inexpensive way to get started in coin magic (Book + DVD = less than $50). For cards I recommend either "Card College vol. 1" and/or "Royal Road to Card Magic". Once you have some of the sleights down you may want to invest in Michael Ammar's DVD called "Easy to Master Card Miracles vol. 1". Hope this helps, Steven |

I second milamber's recommendation for both Bobo's book and Ammar's DVD. The DVD will help jumpstart your sleights and Bobo's book will give you plenty of material to work with as you progress. With those two resources and some pocket change, you are ready to entertain.
