Hey guys,
My mentor gave me this book last night. He said that it was among the top 3 greatest magic books in the world. He told me that it was a first edition, and "they're not made like this anymore..." I was very happy, as I had looked through it a couple of times at the Castle library. I just started looking through it, and was wondering what you guys liked the most. Which tricks do think are overrated, or maybe underrated? Which do you think are the best? Thank you, I know I will end up reading this book 100 times, but still, just to start-off...

Have a look at Caleb's thread in the bizarre section about presenting the Stars of Magic material.

Actually, when I did my initial search for this, I started looking through that thread that you are talking about Jon, it looked very interesting. You have confirmed my assumptions.
Thank you,

Hehe. I was looking at Cutting the Aces, because I have been hearing about it a lot. And I am having a lot of trouble understanding how the aces end up face-up. I have no problem getting them in the right place, kind of, but I have NO CLUE how the aces are reversed automatically in the deck.
So, I went on to another thing that really caught my eye, Bert Allerton's "Pump Room Phantasy" I love, very cool. I will continue.

Consider the following effects:
Spellbound Triumph Chink-A-Chink Copper/Silver Transposition The Homing Card/Card in Pocket Ring on Wand Cups and Balls Color Change Coins Thru the Table Three Ball Transposition Short Change Routine Cigarette thru Handkerchief Coins Across Coin Thru the Hand Cutting the Aces Cap and Pence Torn and Restored Cigarette Paper Card Stab And I'm sure I've omitted several effects. Now consider that the versions of these classic effects that you are privy to if you own SoM are the brainchildren of the following artists: Malini Liepzig Vernon Scarne Jarrow Horowitz Carlyle Bertram Allerton Slydini And again, I think I'm omitting someone. Oh yeah, Daley - Cards up the Sleeve! And there's probably more. These lessons originally were issued individually, and after you bought the course you could buy a spring binder to hold them all. I have the original course, in which the photographs are superb. They were anywhere from 3.00 to 8.00 each, for a total of something like 125.00 back in the fifties! I bought my first Tannen single volume for 12.50 in the early sixties and the photos were first generation and pretty clear. They've gotten worse with each printing and are virtually "unreadable" at this point. Do yourself a favor and find a used older copy. But whatever you do, find a copy! I have often said that if I were to keep one book only on close-up magic, something that I could really use to do shows and make a living, the Stars of Magic would be the book. Page for page, pound for pound, the best book of varied closeup magic extant... So, which are under-rated, which are over rated? None! Where to start? Well, what type of magic do you like best? If it were me, I would start with "Cutting The Aces" for cards then "Triumph", "The Kangaroo Coins" for coins, followed by "Liepzig's Pride". I'd look at "Chink-a-Chink" for an apparently impromptu effect. Remember, this can be done with other objects. In fact, Goshman used bottlecaps to great effect. And then Scarne's "Three Ball Trick". That should get you going... Best, PSC

Vernon's Cutting the Aces is absolutely fantastic. Allerton's Pump Room Phantasy is good also, don't overlook it. I'm still reading through the book, but those are my favorites so far.
Truly fantastic book.

I guess I don't understand why an edition couldn't be printed with the pictures re-vitalized. I have one of the new smudgy picture versions. I'm certain it is possible to improve the quality of the pictures--what's the obstacle? I'd re-buy the book if whomever would take the innitiative to improve this classic.

There's a wonderful 3 Card Prediction by Scarne in there. And the Cutting the Aces routine made me learn a one-handed shuffle. I haven't done that effect for years, but for some reason I can instantly remember it if you hand me a pack of cards.
Great effects in a great book. Greg

The part by Slydini, right at the end, proved very useful. There is a lot to be learned about misdirection there. Still trying to study all the subtleties...

I haven't looked into that section yet, but it looks extremely strong.
Just from reading this book, Slydini has become one of my favorite magicians. "Cutting the aces," as well as "slow-motion aces." I am still having a little trouble with the Cutting the Aces. And I have yet to sit down with a deck of cards for the "slow-motion four aces." thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Look into everything in Stars.
All the tricks and explainations therein have something to offer. Study the book and you will find treasure, some not so noticible at first. |

I am officially totallys LOST in cutting the aces. I have NO CLUE how the aces reverse in the deck. and the trick's instructions end with"... and visible palm the ace which is on top of the deck." yeah, and then do what? lol. This ones directions aren't very good, sorry. When I first read through it I was sure that I was missing a page. And now, I am totally baffled. It's like they didn't want to reveal the secret. It someone could PM, and possibly help me with my troubles, that would be soo kind.

It can be a bit difficult to follow.
You have to follow the PATTER SUGGESTION as well as the INSTRUCTIONS. they work together. Set up as in the Instructions. The Aces do not reverse in the deck. You turn the first two face up after cutting from a back up deck, face down. The third is cut to from a face up, back down deck. The last cut shows the control card used for the count. The palm off is important to Vernon's story patter and follows his Patter Suggestion. The palm off could be eliminated if you feel this don't suit you. Vernon's story line may not fit younger performer and they should use a story that fits them. |

Reverse in the deck??? Does it actually use that wording?
Perhaps you're rushing through the description. Slow down. I too had a bit of trouble with this one until I slowed down and actually read it. Then it made sense. Keep with it, it's a great effect.

When I was preparing my first close-up routine I was talking to a well-known, very experienced magician (whose name I'm not allowed to mention here). I had heard of Triumph but didn't know what the effect was. He simply said, "Get a copy of Stars of Magic. It's in there. Learn it."
A couple of months later I was rehearsing my routine at his home when the doorbell rang and David Malek was ushered in. Great! I'm nervous enough as it is and now I have to perform my routine for David Malek! When I finished David said, "That one with the face-up and face-down cards was good. Is that yours?" I replied, "No. That comes from a man named Dai-something." (He'd never seen Triumph before!) David said that I burned him badly with that one, primarily because I never looked at my hands whilst I was shuffling. So, if you need a place to start, work on Triumph, and continue to work till you do the shuffle without looking at your hands. You'll burn some very good cardmen with that one, and every layman. |

It someone could PM, and possibly help me with my troubles, that would be soo kind. It's an information overload problem. Eugene Burger taught me this approach to the problem. Get a tape recorder (or digital recorder). Record your own voice as you read the instructions out loud, at a steady pace. Then, get the props in hand, and play back your recording. You can then concentrate on the props in hand and the illustrations. You can pause the recording at any moment; there's no need to have any anxiety. I've found that this approach is most helpful when I'm learning magic from a book. Try it. I hope that this will work for you as well.
