Nothing fancy for me - I "close" with Gary Freed's NFW, where 4 jokers turn into 4 aces - very quick and powerful, and visual.
Then I ususally do an "encore" of Color Monte. Now I must admit, I was never a Color Monte fan - the effect never wowed me, compared to lots of other packet tricks that I thought were more visual/magical, and I thought it was pretty childish patter. I could never understand why real, working magicians always raved about it. But, then I tried it out on an audience and got roars of laughter and wild applause, and I have used it in my last 4 performances and the audience just loves it. I am in NYC so I do a little build up about the days in Times Square when shell games and 3 card monte men were all about, then go into the standard patter. Go figure! |

I close with borrowing a ring and performing my effect "The Joining" which links their ring onto a rubber band and then as they are holding their ring as it is linked, it penatrates off the band in their hand.

I'd have to say Paperclipped and In A Flash are what I tend to come back to time and time again.

Back when you could do it without being branded as some sort of social leper, you'd have to go pretty far to beat Steve Fearsons's floating cigarette as a closer.
You know you've done your closer when the audience keeps talking about it no matter what you do next.

Close-Up: Ring in wallet in sealed envelope.
Stand-Up: Lemon-Game hands down!!!! (I can't believe I wrote that because I want everyone to hate it...sorry, I'm just a little selfish when it comes to definite reputation making routines that get me gig, after gig). |

Depends on the setting, but I prefer:
Cards: Ambitious with Paperclipped or Wallet ending. Coins: copper/silver transpo. IT: Fearsons flying Cigarett, and I'm working on the TT vanish to end it. Jack.

My favorite ending trick is Doug Malloy’s Ring to wallet...
I do two or three visual moves with the rope with my own ring, then I borrow a ring for the final vanish. Doug's wallet is superb, and there's a really good visual fooler in the middle. great gags. It's a powerful ending because the spectator has a vested interest in getting their ring back... You end with a real mystery and the envelope has my contact information printed on it so it doubles as my business card. Reset requires 20 seconds in private. Incidentally, I use a pen as my magic wand, and the pens have my name (Mediocre The Great)and phone number printed on them... Sometimes I let them keep the pen (they cost $.25 ea). If the spectator is a glutton for more magic, I do re-cap by Gregory Wilson, wipe off the earwax and hand them the pen. Also, I like doing ambitious card ending with paperclipped. Again, you leave the spectator with a lucky souvenir!
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Standing ovation, is the key! For me, on my last trick I think a standing ovation would signal that is the last trick.
