Just curious here so if Qs are off base or have ben done to death, ignore me (oh the pain of that!) BUT
I just booked our first cruise (as passengers) and it's just a 4 night deal...there are bands and a 'Vegas Style' show and maybe a comedian and possibly a Magician...the ship takes 2,200 folks...so what is the performance sched for a Magician on one of these short cruises? Do you perform 'nightly'? Once or Twice? Only in the 'Vegas' review show? How do you spend your time off stage? It seems like a bizarre existence unless there is a daily appearance...somebody straighten me out...thanks. btw: It's a Carnival Cruise on the Paradise...Long Beach to Ensenada mid September...

Usually the magician performs one night app 45 mins then a captains farewell app 15 mins another night or day , its a rough life doing the cruise circuit ...

Far as I know Carnival ships don't do a Captain’s farewell. Most likely your 4-day cruise is going to go a little something like this.
First night: A welcome aboard show / midnight or late-night comedy show, this could be a magician Second night: A production (Vegas style) show Third night: split bill, comedy / singer. Magician and a midnight show Fourth night: A second Production (Vegas style) show. If I remember right and I rarely do, Bobby Borgia is working Paradise... I will be gone for a week, doing a couple o' the Carnival ships...I will try to find out for ya though. regards TC |

Thanks TC... but it doesn't matter 'who' we get on our cruise... I'm mainly curious how one doesn't go nuts when you're on the ship with not much to do but your act once or twice a week... stir crazy comes to mind... but then I'm a bit claustrophobic... guess it takes a lot of personal dicipline to not run amok on the poop deck.

Maybe you can't understand this (as you live in California), but as a New Englander, I spend countless hours sitting in a deck chair, in the warmth of the Caribbean sunshine, repeating this simple mantra "I'm not in Boston, I'm not in Boston..." This is particularly satisfying between November 1 and April 1. Last year I came home from a ship to find 14 inches of snow to be shoveled. The interesting thing is, most of the people around me seem to be doing the same thing. They just pay for the luxury. Here are the other suggested activities for Type A personalities: Check your email (internet is available on lots of ships these days) Read for enjoyment Read for work (investing, business development, etc.) Write Do other work ( edit video, create webpages etc) - a laptop is essencial Workout learn to fold towels into different animals - a RCCL speciality Enjoy the cruise peter gross http://www.funnymagic.com |

For me it's easy, I am only on a ship two or three days at a time. Carnival uses guest entertainers or Fly-On acts. We fly on to a ship, do our shows and fly home, or to another ship. Two or three days is enough to make me stir crazy...thank god for the crew bar...

Thanks both!
TC You fly onto a ship? How cool is that! Shades of 'Apocolypse Now'! suspectacts: Yep...I understand that perfectly! I lived in Tahoe Paradise for 18 years with 5 ft of snow per night on occasion! And before that, Alaska. Snow?...I hate the stuff (!!!) and love San Diego for that reason...we never have to shovel the weather! (So far.) I too have a mantra nealry every day...'I'm not in tahoe...I'm not in Tahoe'. hahaha. Glad we both have an out.

Doug, was that "I'm not in tahoe" or "thank god I'm not Tahoe?"
and I was born and raised in MOntana, you want to talk about not missing the snow!? |

Doug,
We fly into a port of call, board the ship, do two shows that night and fly home the next day. Repeat every seven days. We did live on the ship for a brief time. So we could see Hawaii and Alaska. That made me a little stir crazy. TC is right. Thank god for the crew bar. They are getting strict but I know how to work loop holes. My lap top saves my sanity. I get tired of watching TV and reading but they help kill time. The best time killer is chasing women! I caught one so she keeps me pretty busy. She is a dancer and has done a contract on the Paradise. She has fond memories of the ship. I have never been on it but am sure you will enjoy yourself. I have done that run. Mexican Riviera? I think that's what it's called. Haggle for everything and kick a chiclet kid for me. R.C.C.L., Princess and most of the other lines wants the act for two week minimum. They want you on the ship in case it's to rocky for a production show to go on. You are already there and must save the day. Carnival has so many people coming and going it's not a problem. My biggest problems is airports and planes. 3-5 flights a week every week. I was nearly kicked off a plane the other day. I was in a good mood and I suppose another passenger didn't like it and complained. Now I would hate to mention the Airline but it is here in America. Don't be to jovial or they will assume you are drunk and not just giddy from getting to see the most beautiful girl in the world. I may have been acting stupid. Hard to tell stupid from drunk I suppose. Will

TGINIT! I lived there 18 years...17 too many.
I heard the Paradise is a REALLY NICE ship...we're only on for the 4 night cruise...stops are Catalina (dull) and Ensinada (a pit)...don't care about the ports as this is a 'test' of ancient ants in the pants to see if I can handle it. Going for the abundence of Food and the Entertainment and the Ocean and the Entertainment and the price oh and the Entertainment! (Very inexpensive.) That dump Ensinada probably won't see me or my wallet...but my Wife want's to see Catalina and I want to ride the Submersable thingy. We'll never go to Vegas so it's real enticing to have all that food and shows at my fingertips! As to flights...not me...flew a ton and had two close calls which were the LAST two I'll ever have. I like to watch them land though!

After the shows check out the piano bar, the rock and roll bar, and the disco. Some good people watching in those clubs. The lido deck is another wonderful place. Oh, and the topless deck. Doug you must find the topless deck. It's heaven in the daytime. Go all the way up to the funnel and you should find it. The dancers hang out there.
If you can swing it I recommend the special dining room. It's called the supper club. It's around 30 bucks a head for a 4 course meal. If you want wine it's more. Some of the best food I have ever eaten. I'm taking my son there for his 13 birthday next week. We are flying to the Carnival Legend in N.Y.C. tomorrow! Oh and Doug. Those stupid elastic bands with a nipple on it that you wear on your wrist is B.S. Might as well go buy some magnetic insoles while you are at it. If you are worried about motion sickness buy some Dramamine before you leave. It'll dope you up but you won't be sick. The best is the stickers behind the ears but I think they come from a Dr. Doug, enjoy your cruise. It took me a couple of months to get my land/sea legs under me. Will

I've been at sea (not a cruise) and fortunately do not get sea sick. My Wife will be on 'em though!
Thanks for the tips! Probably will pass on the Supper Club this trip...not in the budget unfortuntely. I don't even have enough extra top buy a Jacket for the dining room...but a call to Carnival say's I really don't need one...they just say you do so you don't feel out of place when every body else is dressed for the Captain's hoo-haa...me out of place? No Jacket will correct that!

I did a cruise similar to yours and YES...don't bother with Ensinada, just too dirty. It was too rough to port at Catalina so we had to stop at San Diego, so I just stayed on board and PARTIED! I sprung for a new suit for the captains dinner and it's turned out to be my favorite, and only good one, not counting The Blues Brothers black jobs. So maybe some new attire won't be so bad?
Have Fun! Dave

Dave: Maybe I'll make a tinfoil jacket instead. ;-) Truthfully, I have had no use for a jacket for at least the past 10 years...so if the captain's Dinner thing is jacket optional, I'll opt to not bother to wear one. I'm going the extra mile wearing shoes!
San Diego...that would be a treat for us! (since we live 25 miles north and go all the time hahaha.) So in that case we'd be on the ship the whole time. (Bring books.)

Cruise is in September. I bought a freakin' $300 brand new Suit for the Captain's feed...Lobster and such! I'll show them high falootin City Fellers! It's a beauty! Cost me $50 bucks on eBay! hahahaha. (Now I can go to the Magic Castle when invited...hint hint)
Now I need a real shirt and maybe shoes (if I run out of black paint)

I went on my first Carnival cruise 4 years ago. I thought I would be bored silly but I was pleasantly surprised. Each morning someone slipped an itinerary under our door with a detailed schedule of that day's entertainment and activities.
There was always something going on, always food being served, even at 3 AM! It was more a matter of choosing what NOT to do. |

I kick myself for not taking all my free time while working the cruise ships to writing a book.
If I had it all to do over, I would take some of that free time I had on the ship to write. I never thought I would write a book in life. Now I have several in the making. Allow me to encourage your to start writing and watch what happens. It is an investment for your future. Even if you not a writer, you can always find someone to edit it. Steve Hart

Doug,
I use the "Jay Marshall" school of fashion design. It is amazing what good looking (and cheap) coats you can find at Goodwill, AmVets or other thrift stores. I have never had to pay over $10 for a jacket. A couple were like brand new with the pockets still sewn up. Richard

Well...I feel fortunate with this suit...it's a beauty...there was a store going out of biz or moving or something and had all their suits on eBay for $50...I figured what the heck, I only needed a jacket...turns out it is a perfect fit (both jacket and pants) and I took it by Men's Wharehouse and they figured it was at least a $350 suit probably more. Brand new...still with tags...lucked out.
I haven't had a suit since the 70's! Richard: Your pockets may have been sewn up but did you check to see if the Backs had been slit open?
