Hello everyone,
I would like to know who builds the slicer illusion which has been performed by David Copperfield once al least. Iam also interested in the price of the illusion. Thanks a lot for the info! |

If you're referring to the "janet Box" I believe Bill Smith is the liscensed builder, and I believe the price is approx. 10.5K??

I think only about 12 real ones exhist...but I could be wrong. What I'm thinking of is the same illusion Jack is refering to, Franz's janet box and to my knowledge Mendoza is the only liscenced builder of this prop. I've seen one in person, it was built by Mendoza, and its really a work of art.

I worked with a Mendoza model for a couple of years a while back. The working parts get a lot of wear. Most of the blades are joined in pairs and every season the joining bars needed replacing. Having said that - the prop was beautifully made. The prop was being working twice a day - 6 days a week.

Janet Box/Slicer is one of the over 200 original illusions created by Franz Harary. Mendoza is the only builder of them. 12-15 real ones in existance sounds about right.......more or less.

Mendoza is the only authorized builder of this effect. I have always called it the Stretcher blade box as it a combination of the blade box and a stretcher illusion. Last I knew it ran about $30,000.
I would contact Franz and ask him about it. Richard

Mendoza is the only builder of this illusion. It sell for well over $20,000 brand spankin' new. From what I know there are only a dozen or so made by Magic Craft. It's a very complex illusion and required more than a few people to perform it. It's big too .. weighing in at over 800 pounds in two cases. The prop extends to twelve feet long when the girl is separated. By far this is my favorite illusion of all time .. nothing else comes close. I've actually worked on one of these and the workmanship is amazing .. well thought out and built to last a life time. Franz and Mendoza really pulled this one off .. genius.

Jo Eddie Fairchild built one himself, with permission and consent from Franz. It's actually quite a nice piece. He mechanized it to be self expanding via a hydraulic tank on the prop.

Joe Eddie did make with Franz permission. He wanted the illusion so it only took two people to do it. Franz said it could not be done. Joe said if it could, may I build one for myself. Franz said yes. I wish you could have seen Franz's face (along with the stage crews) when Joe performed it at Abbott's last year. It has always been one of my favorite effects also but Joe made it into a really workable peice. It still packs large and doesn't break down.
To briefly explain the differences in Joe's performance is the blades are put in one on top of the box. Joe motions and one by one the blades fall down. He motions again the the box stretches out. Joe also added the little touch that when the box is turned around it spells "Fairchild" on the back of the boxes. He motions again and the box retracts. He removes the blades and she is removed. It is one heck of an illusion. I believe Franz even talked to Joe about making him a similar unit Richard.

To be honest this illusion never really facinated me much. I always thought the method looked too ovious. I also saw a d-base simular to this one in one of Rand Woodburys books and thought it was too bulky. For my money ( yeah..like I have any ) the best cuting in 8 illusion would be " Cutting Edge " by Dan Summers.
Check it out here http://www.danielsummers.com/cuttingedge.html there is a video as well. Nathan |

I had a look at the website and its full of ripped off unauthorized effects including origami, death saw, blaney ladder levitation and more. Its companies like this rip of all the creative thinkers out there. I don't support them or their theft of others work.

Sorry bout that. I should have clarified.
Dan Summers is an original designer and builder of illusions. Check out http://www.danielsummers.com to see what I mean. Dominikmagic however is another story. A true rip off artist if I've ever seen one. Looking at his site made me sick. Nathan |

As someone who designs and builds my own illusions these builders really do make me laugh, but what surprises me is that any one can look at these dodgy ripoffs and think "hey that looks a good illusion think ill buy one".
Just goes to show there are far to many people doing stage illusions that simply have no understanding of what there actually doing. Ross |

I just watched the video and I didn't really enjoy the effect. There are a lot of other illusions out there with a much bigger WOW factor. I think this would be a lot stronger of an illusion if you could actually see the girl inside.

Actually there is a version of janet box where franz opens the doors, not seen too often for obvious reasons, but I saw it on video and its pretty killer. don't underestimate the creativity and thinking of people like franz or chezaday...

Wow factor .. believe me .. when I saw this the first time at Abbott's back in the late 80's .. I just about passed out. There's no other cutting illusion that compairs .. this is the ultimate sawing. As far as seeing the girl inside .. ya he's got a version of that too .. but there's only one of those.
